                Fossil Fuel Subsidies

…cases, subsidy estimates represent a combination of opportunity costs and direct expenditures.Estimates using the price gap approach capture only interventions that result in final prices for end users below what would prevail in a competitive market. They do not, for example, capture subsidised research and development, or subsidies for fossil fuel production. These estimates therefore understate total fossil fuel subsidies, as well as their impact on economic efficiency and trade. Despite these limitations, the method is a valuable tool for estimating subsides and for undertaking comparative analysis across economies to support policy development. For net importers of oil, natural…

Global Methane Tracker 2026 Key findingsKey findings

…metres (bcm) of natural gas could be made available annually through a global effort to cut methane from oil and gas operations, with a further 100 bcm unlocked through the elimination of non-emergency flaring worldwide. It would take time to deploy the equipment and infrastructure needed to achieve cuts of this magnitude. But in the immediate future, if countries with spare export capacity and gas importers were to implement abatement measures across their upstream and downstream operations, we estimate that nearly 15 bcm could be made available in a sufficiently short period of time to provide some relief to gas markets…

…as a whole. Passenger cars are the single largest source of global oil demand today, covering around one-quarter of total consumption, while electric cars are a small but growing driver of electricity demand. The use of alternative fuels, notably biofuels, represents 5% of energy use from cars today and is set to grow in support of policy priorities such as fuel diversification and emissions reductions. The extent and pace by which cars electrify, however, is what will affect future car manufacturing as well as the energy sector the most, and explains the focus of this report. ICE sales will…

…with oil prices on a downward trend after the highs of 2022. Yet geopolitical risks persisted, and some markets remained exposed to volatility. The main European gas price benchmark, the TTF, doubled by December 2024 from its lows in February 2024.  GDP growth in advanced economies slowed slightly to 1.7% in 2024. Continued stronger growth in the US was bolstered by healthy sentiment and consumer confidence. By contrast, the European Union saw weaker growth, amid competitiveness concerns. In emerging market and developing economies growth remained robust but slowed slightly to 4.4%.  People’s Republic of China (hereafter, “China”) reported…

                Manufacturing and Trade Model

The IEA’s Manufacturing and Trade (MaT) Model was first developed for the 2024 edition of Energy Technology Perspectives (ETP) to produce scenario projections of manufacturing and trade across six key energy technology supply chains. These cover solar photovoltaics (PV), wind turbines, electric cars, batteries, electrolysers and heat pumps. This model is now used to generate detailed sector-by-sector and region-by-region long-term scenarios in IEA publications such as the World Energy Outlook and Global EV Outlook. The MaT model is part of the IEA’s broader modelling framework and is closely linked to the Global Energy…

                Northwest European Hydrogen Monitor 2025

…market in Northwest Europe could gradually scale up in the short- to medium-term. Northwest European countries now have ambition to develop up to 30 to 35 gigawatts (GW) of electrolyser capacity by 2030. However, most low-emissions hydrogen projects are currently in the early stages of development. Their success will depend largely on supportive policies and regulatory frameworks. The cost-efficient development of low-emissions hydrogen markets also necessitates a regional approach that maximises existing synergies among national markets. This is the third edition of the Northwest European Hydrogen Monitor. It provides an annual update of low-emissions hydrogen market…
