Coal 2025 Investments in coal projects and emissions abatement
New projects increase the capacity of the project pipeline Forthcoming export-oriented coal projects in our database have a total capacity of 493 Mtpa at the time of writing, 63 Mtpa higher than in our previous report. This increase in the project pipeline is due to improved research on Indonesia rather than more projects actually being developed. This report classifies projects as either more advanced or less advanced based on whether they have received the necessary approvals and permits in their respective countries. The capacity of less-advanced projects declined from 275 Mtpa to 210 Mtpa. Some projects failed to obtain environmental approvals due…

Financing the Modernisation of Power Systems Beyond Coal Executive summary
…industrialisation and electrification. Although the share of coal in electricity generation in the region is expected to decline over the coming decade as renewables expand rapidly, coal-fired power generation is anticipated to remain important for system adequacy, reliability and energy security. Recent disruptions in gas markets have reinforced this role, with governments in Southeast Asia increasing coal-fired power generation to maintain electricity supply and manage fuel supply risks. If operated for typical lifetimes and utilisation rates, the existing worldwide coal fleet would emit 330 gigatonnes (Gt) of carbon dioxide (CO2) to 2100 – more than the historical emissions to date…

Energy and AI AI for energy optimisation and innovation
…of considering the full theoretical potential of AI-led interventions, as it factors in certain insurmountable structural issues that would block their complete adoption. For example, we consider variations in adoption by region by factoring in the availability of enabling digital infrastructure. AI applications for optimising energy systems Oil and gas companies have been among the earliest adopters of new technologies to boost exploration and production. In 2000, 11 supercomputers operated by oil and gas companies ranked among the world’s 500 fastest. By 2024, this number had increased to 24, and total computing capacity has grown at almost 70…

Sustainable Transport Policy for Armenia: A Roadmap Policy recommendations and milestones
…innovation and strengthening financial mechanisms for sustainable transport.Complementary Measures: These are additional initiatives that enhance and refine the transition process. They may not be essential on their own, but they increase efficiency and enhance the impact of the other measures. This categorisation ensures a balanced and strategic approach, allowing decision makers to prioritise key investments. Despite significant geopolitical challenges and resource constraints, Armenia continues to press forward in the transition to sustainable transport. This structured roadmap can help guide government efforts to improve regional connectivity, spur economic development and strengthen energy security in Armenia, while significantly reducing CO2 emissions.

State of Energy Policy 2026 Climate pledges
The new round of NDCs does not imply stronger annual emissions reductions than the previous 2030 NDCs The past year marked a key milestone in the Paris Agreement’s ratcheting mechanism, under which countries update their climate pledges every five years. As of 27 March 2026, more than 130 countries had submitted new NDCs out of the 194 parties to the Paris Agreement that had previously submitted NDCs under the UNFCCC framework, with the vast majority setting new targets for 2035. In total, these submissions cover close to 75% of today’s energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. Some regions have not…

Energy Efficiency 2025 Transport
How and where is energy used? Total final consumption in 2024 was over 450 EJ and has grown by around 25 EJ since 2019. Transport accounts for around 30% of global energy demand and have contributed around 10% of the growth in total demand since 2019. Road transport accounts for nearly 90% of total domestic energy demand. The remaining 10% is split between domestic aviation, domestic shipping and rail.In advanced economies, passenger cars dominate road transport demand, accounting for around 65% of the transport energy use. Trucks make up most of the remainder. Buses play a minor role in energy demand…

Renewables 2025 Renewable electricity
Renewable electricity additions for 2025-2030 total 4 600 GW – equal to the combined installed power capacity of China, the European Union and Japan Globally, renewable power capacity is projected to increase almost 4 600 GW between 2025 and 2030 – double the deployment of the previous five years (2019-2024). Growth in utility-scale and distributed solar PV more than doubles, representing nearly 80% of worldwide renewable electricity capacity expansion. Low module costs, relatively efficient permitting processes and broad social acceptance drive the acceleration in solar PV adoption.Distributed solar PV applications (residential, commercial, industrial and off-grid projects) account for 42…
