Ramping up Heat Pumps in Moldova: A Roadmap A pathway for heat pumps
Heat pumps can strengthen Moldova’s energy security, independence, air pollution and emissions, and even improve energy affordability. Given the regional turmoil – notably in the energy sector – over the past three years and into early 2025, there is a compelling case for reducing natural gas consumption by deploying heat pumps. While Moldova is only beginning to realise its heat pump potential, this presents a significant opportunity to design the system effectively – by stimulating demand, expanding supply, financing the transition and establishing clear regulations. A comprehensive approach will help to ensure a steady and orderly deployment. The following table recommends specific…

…Directive, which establishes criteria for pre-cabling to prevent the future need to retrofit parking infrastructure, which can be costly. The United States increased its charging stock by 20% in 2024 to just under 200 000 public charging points. The National EV Infrastructure Program, part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that was passed in 2021, allocated USD 5 billion to fund fast chargers along corridors, although by the end of 2024 only around USD 30 million had been spent on charging points that are now in operation. In January 2025, Executive Order 14154 paused the disbursement of these funds for a review of the processes, policies…

…framework, with the vast majority setting new targets for 2035. In total, these submissions cover close to 75% of today’s energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. Some regions have not yet submitted, or have withdrawn, their updated commitments. In January 2025, the United States initiated the process of withdrawing from the Paris Agreement, effective from January 2026. The withdrawal implies the abandonment of the commitments made in April 2021 and December 2024, and this is reflected in the methodology and aggregate figures in this report. Countries accounting for around 85% and 45% of regional emissions in North Africa and the Middle East, respectively…

World Energy Investment 2026 How we track investment in energy
…and gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects, investment reflects the capital spending incurred over time as production from a new source ramp up, or to maintain output from an existing asset. For energy efficiency, the measurement task is more complex and much of the expenditure is by consumers for whom purchases of more efficient goods are not investments per se. In WEI 2025, as in other recent IEA reports, investment in energy efficiency aims to reflect the incremental spending by companies, governments, or individuals to acquire a piece of equipment that is more efficient than the local market average…

…to industrial decarbonisation, equity participation in regional infrastructure platforms and upstream resource development. Together, they show how different parts of China’s official financing system interact with local conditions, how technical capabilities are deployed across markets, and how risk-mitigation tools, co-investment structures and SOE balance-sheets shape outcomes on the ground. These case studies also demonstrate that China’s overseas energy engagement is not merely a response to market opportunities, but also an interaction with host countries’ conditions. These financing practices typically align with host governments’ national targets such as expanding renewable capacity, improving grid reliability, or strengthening…

…the World Energy Outlook (WEO) does not include the Announced Pledges Scenario. Our assessment of the new round of NDCs due this year, generally the period to 2035, will follow once there is a more complete picture of these pledges. The Announced Pledges Scenario (APS), introduced in 2021, illustrates the extent to which announced ambitions and targets can deliver the emissions reductions needed to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. In the WEO-2024, the APS includes all recent major national announcements as of the end of August 2024, both 2030 targets and longer-term net zero or carbon neutrality pledges…

Countries with regulations and/or efficiency-based purchase incentives in place improve efficiency on average 60% faster than countries without such policies. Information tools such as vehicle labels help inform consumers of a vehicle’s fuel economy and running cost savings. Labels can illustrate the benefits of choosing more efficient vehicles, while also increasing transparency about real-world fuel use. Another information tool is to promote fuel-efficient driving through training programmes.Incentives such as electric vehicle subsidies can drive the market towards more efficient and less polluting vehicles. Government support…

Ukraine’s Energy Security A pre-winter assessment
Ukraine’s energy sector continues to be a major target of Russian missile and drone attacks As Ukraine enters its fourth winter of the war, energy infrastructure continues to be targeted by Russian attacks. Ukraine’s natural gas and power infrastructure remain vulnerable, with an increasing number of missiles and drones striking critical plants and pipelines. At the same time, evolving tactics and technologies are present a persistent challenge for Ukraine’s air and passive defences.Energy security is central to Ukraine’s overall security. Ensuring that Ukrainian citizens retain access to heat and power is of the utmost importance…

Czechia 2025 Executive summary
…in the coming years will be pivotal to determining the success of the phase-out. This report provides timely advice on how Czechia can achieve its goals, including in two focus areas: replacing coal in power generation and decarbonising heating in buildings.Updating Czechia’s suite of energy strategies is a pressing priority, as is ensuring their collective coherence. Doing so will provide a clearer direction to stakeholders and boost investor confidence. The 2024 National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) sets ambitious goals, including greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions, and increasing the share of renewables and nuclear in power generation…
