The Implications of Oil and Gas Field Decline Rates Executive summary
…the supply picture could develop. This asymmetry is misplaced and a thorough understanding of the rate at which production from existing oil and gas fields declines over time is more important than ever. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has long examined this issue. Decline rates – the annual rate at which production declines from an existing oil or gas field – underpin our analysis of market balances and investment needs across all outlook scenarios.Nearly 90% of annual upstream oil and gas investment since 2019 has been dedicated to offsetting production declines rather than to meet demand growth. Investment in 2025 is…

Renewables 2021 Renewable heat
…11% in 2020 to 13% in 2026, these investments fall short of containing non-renewable heat consumption. Fossil fuel consumption for heat is forecast to see a 5% increase in heat-related CO2 emissions over the outlook period, equivalent to 0.6 Gt CO2.For comparison, to align with the IEA Net Zero Emissions Scenario, renewable heat consumption would have to progress 2.5 times faster, combined with wide-scale behavioural change and much larger energy and material efficiency improvements in both buildings and industry. Keeping up with ambitions in the IEA NZE Scenario requires much faster policy action globally in...

Chile 2050 Energy Transition Roadmap Executive summary
…seafood, but mining continues to dominate Chile’s economic landscape. While this dependence exposes Chile to global commodity cycles, it also positions the country to benefit from rising demand for critical minerals essential for clean energy technologies.Chile has remarkable renewable and critical mineral resources; how they are used will shape the country’s future. Chile’s unique geography – stretching over 4 300 km from north to south – gives it exceptional renewable energy potential. The Atacama Desert boasts some of the world’s highest solar irradiance levels, while the Magallanes region offers wind resources that are among the best available anywhere. Chile…

Electricity Mid-Year Update 2025 Executive summary
…growing air conditioning use, the expansion of data centres, and ongoing electrification will remain major drivers of strong global electricity demand growth through 2026. As a result, electricity demand is expected to rise more than twice as fast as total energy demand in 2025 and to continue this trend in 2026. Electricity demand in China and India is expected to rise at a more moderate pace in 2025 than the rapid growth seen in 2024. After a 7% surge in 2024, electricity consumption in China is projected to increase by 5% in 2025, reflecting slower demand growth in the industrial…

Poland
Poland’s energy system has seen progress on energy transition, despite its reliance on domestic hard coal and lignite. For example, Poland has one of the fastest growing solar PV markets in the European Union and has also seen a strong uptake of heat pumps. Poland is pushing to become a major player in offshore wind, aiming for at least 3.4 GW of capacity by 2030. However, stronger efforts are needed across all sectors to accelerate energy transition and Poland would benefit from greater electricity interconnections with the rest of Europe.

Assessing emissions from LNG supply and abatement options
…availability and reporting of emissions data from the natural gas value chain in recent years. However, estimates are still subject to a high degree of uncertainty. This interim report estimates emissions from LNG supply today, based on the latest and best available data including those from scientific studies and measurement campaigns. It covers upstream production and processing of natural gas, pipeline transmission from processing facilities to export terminals, liquefaction processes, shipping and regasification at import terminals. It considers methane emissions, flaring, naturally occurring sources of CO2 and energy consumption from across the supply chain. It also explores mitigation options, c...
