Electricity 2026 Supply
…thanks to rapid uptake in many regions of the world amid strong cost declines. In 2025, growth in global electricity generation from solar PV saw the largest year-on-year increase, at 620 TWh, compared to 450 TWh in 2024. Solar PV generation is expected to overtake wind and nuclear by 2026 and hydropower by 2029.Low-emissions energy sources – renewables, led by solar, and nuclear – will see their share in global electricity generation rise to 50% through 2030, up from 42% in 2025. Strong growth in renewables and a steady rise in both nuclear and gas output in many regions will…

Global Energy Review 2026 Technology: Battery storage
Battery storage is the fastest growing power technology today. In 2025, 108 GW of new battery storage capacity was deployed worldwide, 40% more than in 2024. Installed capacity is now eleven times higher than in 2021. Lithium‑iron phosphate (LFP) batteries now account for around 90% of deployments; while less energy‑dense than rival chemistries commonly used in EVs, LFP batteries are typically cheaper and better suited to more frequent cycling. Just five years ago, the market share of LFP batteries in deployments was well below 50%. Around 80% of new battery capacity in 2025 was utility‑scale. The remainder was behind-the…

Breakthrough Agenda Report 2026 Executive summary
…key areas of the global climate and energy system through an approach that enables countries to collaborate without requiring universal consensus. The period leading up to the next Global Stocktake concluding in 2028 – when countries assess collective progress towards the Paris Agreement goals – represents a critical window to drive efforts across sectors and places a premium on delivery-oriented collaboration. Many opportunities for collaboration exist, but plans for implementation remain unclear The collaboration landscape spans hundreds of initiatives, platforms and coalitions, involving governments, businesses and civil society. This reflects broad recognition that many energy system challenges cannot be addressed through…

Renewables 2025 Executive summary
…In 2030, annual geothermal capacity additions are expected to reach a historic high, triple the 2024 increase, driven by growth in the United States, Indonesia, Japan, Türkiye, Kenya and the Philippines. The forecast for growth in global renewable power capacity is revised down slightly, mainly due to policy changes in the United States and China. The renewable energy growth forecast for the 2025-2030 period is 5% lower compared with last year’s report, reflecting policy, regulatory and market changes since October 2024. The forecast for the United States is revised down by almost 50%. This reflects several policy changes…

Sustainable Transport Policy for Armenia: A Roadmap Executive summary
…and household purchasing power, policies must prioritise the most economically viable use cases and ensure broad access to electrification. Sustaining momentum will require further differentiation of vehicle import duties, indexing fuel taxes to inflation, and mobilising low-cost international finance to support adoption. The transition to electric mobility will be gradual, requiring a framework that balances fiscal sustainability, economic viability and social equity. The achievements of the past decade already provide a foundation for reform. Existing vehicle import duties should be modified to reflect differences in fuel efficiency and emissions, alongside stricter monitoring and enforcement of in-use vehicles. Circula...

Global EV Outlook 2025 Electric vehicle charging
…out of private charging at residential and commercial buildings is covered under the revised EU Energy Performance in Buildings Directive, which establishes criteria for pre-cabling to prevent the future need to retrofit parking infrastructure, which can be costly. The United States increased its charging stock by 20% in 2024 to just under 200 000 public charging points. The National EV Infrastructure Program, part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that was passed in 2021, allocated USD 5 billion to fund fast chargers along corridors, although by the end of 2024 only around USD 30 million had been spent on charging points that are now in operation…

Breakthrough Agenda Report 2025 Executive summary
…Every year since their adoption, the Breakthrough Agenda reports have outlined the conditions necessary to achieve the 2030 goals, assessed the state of international collaboration in high GHG-emitting sectors, and provided recommendations on actions to accelerate energy transitions. These annual recommendations help to outline collaborative efforts over the course of the year.Translating the Breakthrough Agenda goals into action requires a shared and measurable vision of success. While annual recommendations identify the near-term actions needed to reach those goals, this year we are suggesting “success statements” for each sector that provide additional insight on what it means to…

Ireland has set a national blending mandate for heating.Use in the transport sector continues to grow, especially where targets are based on fuels’ GHG performance, making biomethane more competitive, such as in Germany. On the other hand, creating a unified European market for trading green certificates remains a key demand. The new Union Database, expected to be operational for biogases in 2025, will facilitate the tracking of proof of sustainability (PoS) certificates required under the Renewable Energy Directive (RED).Germany, the world’s largest biogas and biomethane market, with a combined prod...

Indicators Handbook for Just and Inclusive Energy Transitions Introduction
…in November 2024. The principles, which reflect varying perspectives, contexts and experiences, form a framework for approaching transitions that maximises benefits and mitigates the risk of unintended consequences. Designed as a technical resource, the Indicators Handbook provides guidance for governments and other stakeholders on identifying relevant indicators as a first step towards tracking policy design and implementation in line with the G20 Principles for Just and Inclusive Transitions. The Handbook provides tools for tracking progress, evaluating the effectiveness of existing or planned programmes, and supporting the design of just and inclusive energy policies.Recognising the diversity of national energy systems…
