Policy for Early Monetisation of Coal Bed Methane Gas Marketing and Pricing Freedom
With the aim of promoting the gas economy and developing alternate sources of natural gas, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs released a policy framework to provide marketing and pricing freedom for coal bed methane (CBM) and streamline operational issues. The new guidelines replace the New Domestic Gas Pricing Guidelines of 2014 with respect to CBM. Under the Marketing and Pricing Freedom clause, contractors of CBM blocks may sell CBM at Arm's Length Price in the domestic market. Act to Reduce and End Coal-Fired Power Generation

Reduction of Carbon Dioxide Emissions from Coal-fired Generation of Electricity Regulations
In 2018, the Government of Canada announced amendments to the Reduction of Carbon Dioxide Emissions from Coal-fired Generation of Electricity Regulations (2012) to accelerate the phase-out of conventional coal-fired power generation from 2050 to 2030. The regulations do so by requiring all units to meet a performance standard of 420 t/GWh by December 31, 2029. Owners/operators can achieve the requirements by installing carbon capture equipment, switching to run on natural gas, or shutting down operations. Bill on the prohibition of coal-fired thermoelectric plants
The Bill was drafted and presented in January 2020. It recognizes the impacts of emissions from coal-fired power plants as a risk to human health and to the environment. On June 22, 2021, the Bill was approved by the Chamber of Deputies. The installation and operation of coal-fired thermoelectric plants will be prohibited throughout the country. For power plants that are less than 30 years old, the ban will take effect on December 31, 2025.
