Global energy demand growth was met by diverse range of sources in 2025, led by solar and then gas
…growth of electric vehicles, which constrained demand for road fuels. Electric car sales in 2025 increased by over 20% to more than 20 million units – making up around one in four new car sales worldwide. Strong renewables growth reduced coal use in power generation in China, while coal demand increased in the United States as high natural gas prices drove gas-to-coal switching in electricity generation. Overall, the rate of coal demand growth slowed in 2025.“Global energy demand continued to increase in 2025 against a complex economic and geopolitical backdrop, with one trend unmistakeable: the expanding electrification of economies,”...

Methane Regulator-to-Regulator Network (MR2R) - Inaugural Plenary Meeting
The IEA and UNEP’s Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) are hosting the inaugural plenary meeting of the Methane Regulator-to-Regulator (MR2R) Network at the IEA Headquarters. As countries move to deliver on Global Methane Pledge commitments and respond to expectations for near zero methane intensity marketplaces, regulators are increasingly being called upon to implement new regulatory frameworks for methane abatement. The MR2R Network has been created to be a trusted, closed-door environment for regulators to connect with peers, share real-world experiences, and co-develop solutions to shared challenges. The Network builds on the series of IEA regional…

What it would take to unlock the next phase of hydrogen growth
…steel sector. Demand grew by almost 2% from 2023, in line with overall energy demand growth. This consumption was almost completely met with hydrogen produced from unabated fossil fuels, using 290 billion cubic metres of natural gas and 90 million tonnes of coal equivalent. However, alternative technologies that can produce low-emissions hydrogen have attracted a lot of interest from governments given their potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and diversify energy supply, particularly in countries that have a large dependence on fossil fuel imports.Low-emissions hydrogen production – or the production of hydrogen from low-emissions electricity via water electrolysis, from…

Global electricity demand is set to grow strongly to 2030, underscoring need for investments in grids and flexibility
…the process of overtaking generation from coal, after virtually drawing level with it in 2025 based on the latest available data. Nuclear power output also rose to a new record. The momentum behind low-emissions sources of generation continues to 2030, by which time renewables and nuclear are together set to generate 50% of global electricity, up from 42% today.Natural gas-fired output is also set to grow through 2030, supported by rising electricity demand in the United States and the continuing shift from oil to gas for power in the Middle East. Coal‑fired generation loses ground globally as…
