Global EV Outlook 2025 Outlook for electric mobility
…IEA will develop later in the year using its Global Energy and Climate Model (GEC-M). Key uncertainties for EV markets for the medium-term – such as those related to the evolution of trade and industrial policy, downside risks to the economic outlook and the impact of different levels of oil prices – are, however, presented in this chapter of the report. The projections in the STEPS in GEVO-2025 consider historical market data and stated policies up until the end of February 2025. These scenario projections incorporate GDP assumptions from the International Monetary Fund and population assumptions from the United…

Southeast Asia Energy Outlook 2026 Southeast Asia’s energy challenges and emerging opportunities
The Middle East crisis has exposed Southeast Asia’s vulnerability to fossil fuel supply shocks and the limits of short-term emergency responses. Before the crisis, around 60% of the region’s crude oil imports and a third of its gas imports came from the Middle East, while 45% of its oil product supply was linked to Middle Eastern crude once refinery feedstocks and indirect product trade are included. Governments have responded with demand-reduction measures, tax relief, subsidies, price caps and targeted support to cushion households and firms from higher fuel and electricity costs. However, these measures add to…

Global EV Outlook 2026 Trends in electric cars
…that began in 2021 after the Covid‑19 pandemic. As a result, about 5% of the global car stock is now electrified, displacing 1.2 million barrels of oil per day in 2025. In particular, 2025 saw a boost for battery electric cars. The share of battery electric cars in total electric car sales increased to 65%, reversing the trend seen in the 2 years prior. While 2024 saw a strong increase in extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), this did not continue in 2025, dropping to less than 7% of total electric car sales, after rising to 7.5% in 2024.Market developments varied…

…renewable hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels, with activity concentrated in the United States and Europe. Globally, EVs are expected to account for more than 15% of the vehicle stock by 2030, with renewable electricity meeting more than half of electricity demand in key markets. In China, EVs represent more than one-third of cars on the road by 2030 as vehicle costs decline and charging infrastructure continues to be enhanced. At the same time, renewable electricity is expected to make up over half of China’s total power generation. The forecast for the use of low-emissions hydrogen and hydrogen…

…globally in 2021, together with 34% of natural gas, 4% of oil, 52% of all renewables and nearly 100% of nuclear power. It also accounted for over one-third of all energy-related CO2 emissions in 2021. Key findings Global electricity demand rises by 5 900 terawatt-hours (TWh) in the Stated Policies Scenario (STEPS) and over 7 000 TWh in the Announced Pledges Scenario (APS) by 2030, equivalent to adding the current level of demand in the United States and the European Union. In advanced economies, transport is the largest contributor to increased electricity demand as the market share…

Delivering Sustainable Fuels Executive summary
…Sustainable fuels can also enhance energy security, stimulate economic development and strengthen environmental sustainability.Greater use of sustainable fuels can bolster energy security by diversifying fuel supply and reducing fossil-fuel import dependence. Sustainable fuels can be produced from domestic resources in many countries, reducing exposure to volatile international oil and gas markets and supply risks. In 2024, liquid biofuels lowered transport fuel import dependence by 5-15 percentage points in relevant importing countries, and global oil demand was around 2.5 million barrels per day lower than it would have been without their contribution.Sustainable fuels can be a…

Some regional policies have been included if they play a significant role in shaping energy at a global scale (e.g. regional carbon markets and standards in very large provinces or states). The tables do not include all policies and measures; rather they highlight the policies principally shaping global energy demand today, being derived from an exhaustive examination of announcements and plans in countries around the world. Industry-led initiatives and manufacturing targets that are partially or fully met in the IEA scenarios are the final element making…

Global EV Outlook 2025 Electric vehicle batteries
…EV. Emerging markets and developing economies other than China continued to represent only a small share of global battery demand, reaching nearly 5% in 2024. Nevertheless, their share has doubled since 2022, underpinned by sustained growth in Southeast Asia, India and Brazil. Outlook for battery demand Electric vehicle battery demand jumps more than threefold by 2030 EV battery demand continues to grow, and is expected to reach more than 3 TWh in 2030 in the STEPS, up from about 1 TWh in 2024. While electric cars will remain the primary driver of battery demand, other modes are set to gain market share. Notably…

…in Thailand and Viet Nam. In Brazil, the largest car market in Latin America, electric car sales more than doubled to 125 000 in 2024, reaching a sales share of over 6%. Sales in Africa also more than doubled, too, mostly thanks to growing sales in Egypt and Morocco, though electric cars still represent less than 1% of total car sales across the continent. Policy support and relatively affordable electric car imports from China played a central role in increasing sales in some emerging electric vehicle (EV) markets, accounting for 85% of electric car sales in both Brazil and Thailand, for example…
