Germany's Renewables Energy Act
As of 14 December 2020, Germany's ruling coalition agreed modifications to its energy law to create the legal basis for continuing the expansion of renewable energy in the long term and help the country meet its goal of producing 65% of its electricity from clean sources from 2030. The law came into force as of 1 January 2021. It seeks to help ensure that both electricity supply and electricity consumption become carbon-neutral before 2050. To this end, the law specifies the pace at which sustainable energy such as wind and photovoltaics are to be expanded over the next…

Colombia's Short-Lived Climate Pollutants Strategy
Colombia's Short-Lived Climate Pollutants Strategy is part of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition's (CCAC) “Support for National Action Planning” initiative. This strategy identifies actions towards addressing short-lived climate pollutants (SLCP) and that should be addressed through the planning and implementation of domestic policies. As part of the actions to the mitigation of SLCP, the oil and gas and mining sector are included. Concrete actions are: 1. To recover, use and oxidize methane from coal mines2. To recover and use the gas and fugitive emissions during the production of oil and gas3. To reduce the leaks…

Financing Electricity Access in Africa Executive summary
Lack of capital presents a major impediment to universal electricity access Nearly two out of every five people in Africa – around 600 million in total – still live without access to electricity. Electrification has barely kept pace with population growth, leaving the continent far behind the targets set by African governments and the international community. Progress in reducing the absolute number of people without access has stalled in recent years, with the rate of improvement failing to fully recover to pre-pandemic levels. Fewer than 19 million people gained access in both 2023 and 2024, compared with 23 million in 2019…

Global EV Outlook 2025 Electric vehicle charging
Charging electric light-duty vehicles Public chargers have doubled since 2022 to reach more than 5 million Access to public charging points is key to supporting mass adoptionHome charging remains the most popular way to charge for EV owners. However, more public chargers are needed to support mass adoption of EVs among segments of the population without access to home chargers. In 2024, more than 1.3 million public charging points were added to the global stock, representing an increase of more than 30% compared to the previous year. Just the charging points added in 2024 were approximately equal to the…

Global Energy Review 2026 Technology: Solar PV and wind
In 2025, global annual renewable capacity additions increased by 16%, reaching 800 GW despite challenges linked to supply chain strains, grid connection delays, financial pressures and policy shifts. This marked the 23rd consecutive year that renewables set new expansion records. Solar PV accounted for more than three-quarters of new renewable capacity additions worldwide, followed by wind (20%). The remaining share was made up by hydropower, bioenergy, geothermal, concentrating solar power and marine energy. Solar PV capacity additions in 2025 rose by around 12%, surpassing 600 GW for the first time. This expansion brought cumulative solar PV capacity to around…

The EU's long-term policy goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions towards climate neutrality by 2050.Section 1 of the Plan describes the sources and trends in EU's methane emissions. Data in this section comes from EU greenhouse gas inventories. The agriculture sector represents 54% of methane emissions — the largest source of methane emissions in the EU. Emissions in this sector have…

1st Relief Package
First relief package of emergency measures agaist rising energy prices were announced by coalition on 23 February 2022 as part of “10 relief measures for Germany”. These included:EEG levy abolition brought 6 month early. The EEG levy (3.72 cents per kilowatt hour) aims to make renewable-based electricity generation more competitive by charging consumers the difference between the spot price of renewable electricity and the marginal cost of electricity production. The federal government had initially planned to remove this levy from consumers and absorb the cost through the federal budget from 01/01/2023, but now this will…
