Responding to Satellite Notifications from the Methane Alert and Response System
…in implementing this framework within their jurisdiction are encouraged to get in touch with IMEO and the IEA. Executive summary In 2023, the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) introduced the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS), which uses satellite data (coupled with scientific expertise and artificial intelligence) to provide free notifications of large methane emission events to governments and companies.MARS satellite alerts provide rapid and actionable information that can enable quick mitigation action. Swift action on major leaks or releases detected via MARS can deliver significant benefits for governments, potentially reducing gas waste…

China’s Official Energy Finance in Emerging and Developing Economies
Evolving institutions, instruments and implications for clean energy transitions Global energy investment exceeded USD 3.3 trillion in 2025, but capital flows remain uneven. Emerging market and developing economies (EMDE) outside China attracted just 27% of total energy investment and 18% of clean energy spending, despite accounting for nearly two-thirds of the global population and the bulk of future demand. Addressing this imbalance requires mobilising more capital from diverse sources into EMDE energy systems.China continues to play a central role in global energy investment flows because of its large domestic investments and its large external capital spending on energy. Since…

Egypt
Egypt has initiated a number of energy sector reforms, gradually reducing electricity subsidies and introducing feed-in tariffs to promote renewable energy production. The energy sector reforms recently initiated by the country have resulted in a significant increase in investments which have boosted electricity production over the last 5 years and ensured a stable supply across the country.
Egypt also has plans to increase the share of renewables in the electricity mix to 42% by 2035.- Overview

Global Energy Review 2025 Natural gas
…Global gas demand reached a new all-time high, with over three-quarters of growth coming from emerging market and developing economies. Preliminary data indicate that gas demand increased by 2.7%, or 115 billion cubic metres (bcm) (equivalent to around 4 EJ) in 2024. This was above the around 2% annual average growth rate from 2010 to 2019 and well above the rate of around 1% between 2019 and 2023, amid the Covid pandemic and global energy crisis. Emerging market and developing economies in Asia accounted for around 40% of additional gas demand in 2024 on the back of…

Energy crisis threatens world’s most vulnerable as cooking fuel shortages grow
…economies and societies in profound ways, often forcing households to ration fuel for their cars and heating for their homes. The 2026 crisis is being felt across the globe – and households in emerging and developing economies are now facing a particularly severe challenge: whether there is enough fuel simply to cook a meal, and whether they can still afford it.At the centre of this sits liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), the world's most widely used cooking fuel. Around 3.4 billion people across the developing world use LPG as their primary source of energy for cooking. As of 2025…

World Energy Investment 2025 Latin America and the Caribbean
…Chile, Colombia and Costa Rica accounted for the largest increase, given the doubling of renewable investment flowing into the three countries. Brazil played a significant role in building momentum behind clean energy investment, thanks to the county’s enabling environment for investment in small-scale solar PV and bioenergy, further accelerated by the enactment of the Future Fuel Law in 2024. Over the same period, fossil fuel investment decreased by more than 20%, to more than USD 90 billion a year, with Brazil, Argentina and Mexico accounting for almost 70% of the total. However, the region experienced shortages and blackouts due to…
