Global Energy Review 2026 Technology: Electric vehicles
…electric vehicles, with plug-in hybrids seeing a smaller increase (4%). In the European Union, electric car sales increased by 30% in 2025. The biggest EU car market – Germany – saw significant growth in electric car sales, as did Spain and Italy, following a reintroduction of purchase subsidies in those two countries. Other large-volume markets saw growth in electric car sales as well. In Poland, sales increased by 140%, while the Netherlands saw a 25% rise. In France, sales volumes were similar to 2024. Europe as a whole overtook China as the fastest growing major market for electric cars. In…

Coal 2025 Investments in coal projects and emissions abatement
New projects increase the capacity of the project pipeline Forthcoming export-oriented coal projects in our database have a total capacity of 493 Mtpa at the time of writing, 63 Mtpa higher than in our previous report. This increase in the project pipeline is due to improved research on Indonesia rather than more projects actually being developed. This report classifies projects as either more advanced or less advanced based on whether they have received the necessary approvals and permits in their respective countries. The capacity of less-advanced projects declined from 275 Mtpa to 210 Mtpa. Some projects failed to obtain environmental approvals due…

Breakthrough Agenda Report 2025 Cement and concrete
State of the transition Emissions Total CO2 emissions are higher today than in 2015. Reductions in recent years have come from declines in global production, while direct CO2 emissions intensity remains unchanged. Both need to fall in the coming years to get on track for net zero by 2050, with contributions from improved material efficiency, greater use of alternative fuels and supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), and CCS. Cost Production costs for early commercial plants for near-zero emissions cement using CCS are estimated to be 75-150% higher than today’s conventional plants, varying by region. This cost premium will…

Energy Efficiency 2024 How is the dumping of inefficient equipment affecting efficiency progress?
…been defined by the Duke University School of Law as “the practice of exporting to another country or territory products that contain hazardous substances; have environmental performance lower than is in the interest of consumers or that is contrary to the interests of local and global commons; or can undermine the ability of the importing country to fulfil international environmental treaty commitments”. Dumping therefore includes the export of equipment that is treated as waste in the receiving country, equipment that is sold on second-hand markets, or new first-hand equipment that is of inferior environmental and energy consumption performance…

Global EV Outlook 2025 Trends in other light-duty electric vehicles
…around 15% in 2024 with total electric model sales reaching 10 million. The electric sales share stalled in 2024, mostly due to the shrinking Chinese electric 2/3W market, although growth in other regions was steady. China, India and Southeast Asia remain the world’s largest 2/3W markets, accounting for around 80% of 2024 global sales, with 2/3Ws serving as the primary mode of private passenger transport in India and Southeast Asia. Electric 2/3Ws stand out as the most affordable and accessible entry point into electric mobility. Unlike cars, many models do not rely on extensive charging infrastructure…

Global EV Outlook 2025 Trends in electric car markets
…electric car sales in the whole of 2020. China maintained its lead among major markets, with electric car sales exceeding 11 million – more than were sold worldwide just 2 years earlier. Global sales were slightly tempered by stagnating growth in Europe, as subsidies were phased out or reduced in several major markets, and as the EU CO2 targets for cars remained the same between 2023 and 2024. Electric car sales continued to increase in the United States although growth was about one-quarter that of the previous year. Significantly, outside of these three major markets, there was a record increase in sales…
