Global EV Outlook 2025 Outlook for electric mobility
…As the IEA highlighted in its 2024 edition of Energy Technology Perspectives, energy, industrial and trade policies are increasingly interwoven and there are challenges and trade-offs between these key areas of public policy. The way these interactions play out for electric mobility over the longer term will therefore be assessed holistically in the context of the scenarios of the entire global energy system that the IEA will develop later in the year using its Global Energy and Climate Model (GEC-M). Key uncertainties for EV markets for the medium-term – such as those related to the evolution of trade…

…dependence, particularly on natural gas from a single supplier. The government is contemplating attractive investment measures and fuel diversification to reduce natural gas consumption and include more coal and renewables into the country's energy mix, while developing local energy sources and introducing nuclear power.
Belarus has also prioritized improving energy efficiency in electricity and heat production and is phasing out subsidies for electricity, heat and gas, which is expected to make the energy sector more market-focused and investor-friendly. Belarus is part of the EU4Energy Programme, an initiative focused on evidence-based policy making for the energy sector.- Overview

Chemicals
Country and regional highlights
Important steps to deploy low-emissions chemicals production technologies are being taken in several regions
CO2 emissions
CO2 emissions must decouple from production by 2030 to get on track with the NZE Scenario
Energy
Energy consumption for feedstock will continue to rise with production, but process energy intensity declines rapidly in the NZE Scenario
Activity
Primary chemical production is set to keep growing in the NZE Scenario

Critical Mineral Traceability for Energy and Economic Security Executive summary
…requirements linked to responsible production and conditions attached to public finance and procurement. The IEA and the OECD conducted a joint survey on traceability with more than 80 respondent companies active in critical mineral supply chains. Based on insights from the survey, this report sets out the current state of play and identifies priority actions to strengthen the role of traceability in supporting energy and economic security. The OECD is set to release a separate report on the role of traceability in supporting resilient and responsible supply chains.Companies have begun implementing traceability systems, but uptake remains uneven across minerals…

Breakthrough Agenda Report 2025
Accelerating sector transitions through stronger International collaboration Breakthrough Agenda Report 2024 Since its launch at COP 26, the Breakthrough Agenda has become established as an annual collaborative process centred around the Conference of the Parties (COP) meetings of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It is currently supported by over 60 countries representing over 80% of global GDP, and by over 150 initiatives working to enhance collaboration within major emitting sectors. Countries can endorse Breakthrough goals to make clean technologies and sustainable practices more affordable, accessible and attractive than their alternatives by 2030 in the power, road transport…

Designing Energy Efficiency Policies to Enhance Affordability
…on designing energy efficiency policies that support affordability, particularly in the buildings sector. As part of this work, the IEA conducted a survey with G7 governments to better understand the obstacles they face. On the consumer side, major challenges include the landlord-tenant split incentive, high upfront costs and administrative complexity. On the supply side, governments identified skills shortages and difficulties in reaching underserved communities. The report analyses the affordability-focused energy efficiency policies of G7 countries. These include targeted financial support, simplified programme design, strong local delivery models, and better integration with workforce development. Embedding affordability into energy efficiency…

Methane Abatement
…action. Around 70% of fossil fuel methane emissions in 2025 came from the top 10 emitting countries. Meanwhile, the methane intensity of oil and gas production varies widely across countries – with the best performers scoring more than 100 times better than the worst.
And with energy security in focus around the world, methane abatement could deliver benefits by putting more gas to productive use. Efforts to cut methane from oil and gas operations globally could deliver nearly 100 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas to markets each year, while eliminating non-emergency gas flaring could unlock a further 100 bcm.

Energy Efficiency 2025 Industry
…However, as the sector is characterised by long-life assets, policies targeting these industries are often part of wider long-term decarbonisation efforts rather than energy efficiency alone. In less energy-intensive industries, there are many economically feasible and readily available technologies and methods to improve efficiency in the short term. Efficiency improvements come, for example, from more efficient motors, which account for a large part of the sector’s electricity consumption. Furthermore, a large part of energy demand is used for heat production, and much of this required heat falls within low-temperature ranges (up to 200°C), which could…

World Energy Outlook 2025 Overview and key findings
…less than 10% of global growth in electricity demand, but this is a larger factor in the United States where a large share of new data centres are located. Today, around 730 million people still live without electricity, and nearly 2 billion rely on polluting cooking methods. As things stand, the world is not on track to close this huge gap in the provision of modern energy. Our new analysis draws on lessons from countries that have achieved rapid progress and outlines a new pathway to universal access, reaching this milestone in 2035 for electricity and 2040 for clean cooking.

World Energy Outlook 2022 Key findings
…and the acute strains on markets today are drawing comparison with the most severe energy disruptions in modern energy history, most notably the oil shocks of the 1970s. Then, as now, there were strong geopolitical drivers for the rise in prices, which led to high inflation and economic damage. Then, as now, the crises brought to the surface some underlying fragilities and dependencies in the energy system. Then, as now, high prices created strong economic incentives to act, and those incentives were reinforced by considerations of economic and energy security. But today’s global energy crisis is significantly broader and…
