Cars and Vans
More stringent and broader coverage of fuel efficiency standards for light-duty vehicles is needed
For cars and vans, increasing fuel efficiency standards is important as even in the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario, nearly 80% of cars and vans on the road in 2030 are still powered with internal combustion engines. Sales of heavier, less efficient SUVs reached around 46% of global sales in 2022, while electric vehicles were just 14% of sales. More and more countries are formulating vehicle efficiency standards and some are even putting in place zero-emission vehicle sales requirements. To be in line…

Critical Mineral Traceability for Energy and Economic Security
…how they move through supply chains, who has custody of them and how they are transformed is increasingly important for policymakers seeking to create diversified and responsible supply chains. This report provides insights from a first-of-its kind survey on traceability conducted by the IEA and OECD. More than 80 respondent companies active across supply chains of the six focus minerals (copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt, graphite and rare earth elements) provided results between October and December 2025. Drawing on these, the report assesses the current state of company traceability practices, examines how governments are deploying traceability as a policy…

Global Energy and Climate Model Understanding GEC Model scenarios
…technological progress. In addition, we include three scenarios that have normative elements relating to energy access or the achievement of various goals related to emissions. This means that these scenarios work toward a defined outcome and map out a way to achieve it. The Accelerating Clean Cooking and Electricity Services Scenario (ACCESS) - an additional scenario included for the first time in the WEO-2025 - represents a roadmap to achieve universal access to electricity by 2035 and clean cooking by 2040. The Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario shows a global pathway to reach net zero emissions from the energy sector…

Nickel
Outlook for key energy transition minerals This report provides an outlook for demand and supply for key energy minerals including copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt, graphite and rare earth elements. Demand projections encompass both key energy technologies and other uses under different IEA Scenarios. Supply projections are based on a detailed review of all announced projects. They show how today's geographical concentration evolves over time, for both mining and refining and how expected supply compares with primary supply requirements.

Global EV Outlook 2025 Outlook for electric mobility
…the longer term will therefore be assessed holistically in the context of the scenarios of the entire global energy system that the IEA will develop later in the year using its Global Energy and Climate Model (GEC-M). Key uncertainties for EV markets for the medium-term – such as those related to the evolution of trade and industrial policy, downside risks to the economic outlook and the impact of different levels of oil prices – are, however, presented in this chapter of the report. The projections in the STEPS in GEVO-2025 consider historical market data and stated policies up until…

Southeast Asia Energy Outlook 2026 Energy outlook to 2050 based on targets and pledges
…Rapid electrification reshapes final energy consumption and reduces import exposure. Total final consumption reaches 26 EJ by 2035 in the APS, compared with 28 EJ in the STEPS, as stronger efficiency and electrification curb demand growth. By 2050, fossil fuel demand in end-use sectors falls to around 10 EJ, or less than 40% of total final consumption, compared with more than 19 EJ in the STEPS. This lowers imported fossil fuel needs by 4 EJ in 2050 relative to the STEPS and reduces the fossil fuel import bill by USD 160 billion, strengthening energy security while lowering emissions.End…

Indicators Handbook for Just and Inclusive Energy Transitions Key findings from workshops on challenges and opportunities for tracking progress on just and inclusive energy transitions
…social impacts of clean energy transitions (e.g. improvements in health or reductions in socio-economic inequalities) can take longer to be observed than technical indicators like CO₂ emissions. Indicators are therefore essential at different time scales, including medium-term indicators that bridge the gap between immediate activities (e.g. workshops held) and long-term indicators (e.g. jobs created). These medium-term indicators can help evaluate early effects and create immediate feedback loops for policymakers to make course corrections and adjust policies as necessary.Investing in technical capacity building can enhance data collection to track progress. Many countries experience…

Czechia 2025
…was prepared in partnership between the Government of Czechia and the IEA. It draws on the IEA’s extensive knowledge and the inputs of expert peers from IEA Member countries to assess Czechia’s most pressing energy sector challenges and provide recommendations on how to address them, backed by international best practices. The report also highlights areas where Czechia’s leadership can serve as an example in promoting secure and clean energy transitions. It also promotes the exchange of best practices among countries to foster learning, build consensus and strengthen political will for a sustainable and affordable energy future. Translation

World Energy Outlook 2022 Outlook for energy demand
…Renewables, notably solar PV and wind, gain the most ground of any energy source this decade, accounting for 43% of electricity generation worldwide in 2030, up from 28% today. Oil demand rises 0.8% per year to 2030, but peaks soon after at around 103 million barrels per day as electric vehicles (EVs) and efficiency gains undermine its prospects. The tone for accelerated clean energy development this decade in advanced economies is being set by new policy packages and government plans and targets, notably those set out in: Inflation Reduction Act (United States); RePowerEU plan and Fit for 55 package (European…
