Electricity access in Tanzania increased from around 13% in 2008 to 32% in 2017. The government is supporting the private sector to develop its electricity market, enhancing the role of renewable energy in the energy mix and increasing rural electricity access.

                Southeast Asia Energy Outlook 2026

The Southeast Asia Energy Outlook 2026 is the seventh edition of this World Energy Outlook Special Report, making Southeast Asia by far the most regularly updated regional outlook compiled by the International Energy Agency (IEA). This reflects the dynamism of the region, as well as the importance of the IEA’s partnership with the eleven countries that make up the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) – Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste (joined ASEAN in 2025) and Viet Nam.As energy security concerns move ever higher on…

                Vehicle-to-grid technology

GEVO 2026 - Chapter 8 With the rollout of smart and bidirectional charging, EV owners can reduce charging costs and, in some cases, generate revenue by participating in grid services, such as frequency regulation. Load shifting and vehicle‑to‑grid (V2G) capabilities provide substantial electricity system benefits, helping reduce peak demand and potentially limiting the need for future grid investment – benefits for which EV owners can be compensated. Vehicle-to-grid charging holds the promise of alleviating grid constraints but barriers remain The rollout of EVs is a major driver of global electricity demand growth. Residential EV charging can draw more power than…

                Chad

In Chad, only 4% of the population has access to electricity. This goes hand-in-hand with low rates of access to basic services such as drinking water, basic sanitation and paved roads. Meanwhile, crude oil has become the country’s primary source of export earnings. In 2019, Chad’s energy mix was dominated by biofuels and wastes (85%) with oil products accounting for the rest of the total energy supply. In 2020, less than 5% of the population had access to clean cooking and 8% had access to electricity. The electrification rate is one of the lowest in Sub…

Southeast Asia Energy Outlook 2026 Southeast Asia’s energy challenges and emerging opportunitiesSoutheast Asia’s energy challenges and emerging opportunities

The Middle East crisis has exposed Southeast Asia’s vulnerability to fossil fuel supply shocks and the limits of short-term emergency responses. Before the crisis, around 60% of the region’s crude oil imports and a third of its gas imports came from the Middle East, while 45% of its oil product supply was linked to Middle Eastern crude once refinery feedstocks and indirect product trade are included. Governments have responded with demand-reduction measures, tax relief, subsidies, price caps and targeted support to cushion households and firms from higher fuel and electricity costs. However, these measures add to…

World Energy Outlook 2025 Regional insightsRegional insights

Diverse priorities, diverse pathways This chapter explores energy sector trends and priorities in countries and regions that cumulatively account for around 90% of the world’s population, GDP and energy demand. Priorities, objectives and national circumstances vary widely between and within regions, but two trends that are visible in most parts of the world are a rise in the electrification of end-uses, and a rise in the share of renewables in electricity generation. Energy trends in advanced economies are shaped by the structure of their economies, and by high average incomes and rates of vehicle and appliance ownership. Overall…

                Delivering Sustainable Fuels

Pathways to 2035 Sustainable fuels – including liquid biofuels, biogases, low-emissions hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels – offer multiple benefits for the energy sector. They complement electrification and energy efficiency in energy transitions, and are particularly important for sectors that continue to be reliant on fuel-based solutions such as aviation, shipping, and parts of road transport and industry. Sustainable fuels can also enhance energy security, strengthen environmental sustainability and stimulate economic development, particularly in rural areas. If fully legislated and implemented, current and proposed national and international policies would put the use of sustainable liquid and gaseous fuels on a…

Powering Ireland’s Energy Future Executive summaryExecutive summary

Ireland faces strategic choices to align its energy, climate and socio-economic goals through 2035 Over the next decade, decision makers in Ireland will need to balance a range of trends and policy ambitions that have strong implications for the power sector. Ireland has set a range of policy goals spanning the next decade, from improving energy security by reducing its reliance on imported fossil fuels, to meeting its climate targets, expanding its housing stock, and supporting the growth of digital infrastructure such as data centres. These ambitions all have strong links to the country's power sector, with implications…

Expanding power investment and keeping adequate electricity supply capacity will be crucial to meet rising electricity demand and ensure stable supply for the economies of Japan and Korea Japan and Korea are two of the most advanced economies in Asia, both having a strong focus on trade with a dependence on energy imports to meet demand. Energy security concerns are spurred by their low energy self-sufficiency rates, Japan at 13% and Korea at 19%. To reduce their reliance on imports and to promote the energy transition, both countries have made significant investment in clean energy, with 92% of total…
