IEA-MEMR Workshop on opportunities in managing GHG emissions and mine waste in Indonesia’s critical minerals regulations

Workshop — Jakarta, Indonesia

Workshop on critical minerals in Indonesia. IEA-MEMR

Background information

This week, the IEA convened a workshop in Jakarta, Indonesia, focused on the management of greenhouse gas emissions and mine waste in Indonesia’s critical minerals regulations. Co-hosted with Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR), the workshop explored opportunities and challenges in Indonesia, while sharing international best practices.

The event brought together over 35 participants, including government officials from various directorates of MEMR (such as the Directorate General of Mineral and Coal (MINERBA), the Centre for Mineral and Coal Testing (TekMIRA), and the Centre for Data and Information Technology (Pusdatin)), the Ministry of Environment, the National Economic Council, the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as industry representatives and international organisations.

The workshop built on findings of the IEA’s report titled Management of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Mine Waste within Critical Mineral Mine Operations in Indonesia, which was the result of a cooperative initiative launched in early 2024 between the IEA and MEMR, aimed at supporting sustainable and responsible critical minerals supply chains.

Participants at the workshop engaged with the findings of the report, discussed existing initiatives undertaken in Indonesia to promote sustainable and responsible mining practices, and explored opportunities for future collaboration with the IEA to strengthen the policy framework governing Indonesia’s mining sector.
