Background information
The sixth edition of the IEA’s Southeast Asia Energy Outlook will explore the latest energy developments and trends in the region, whose influence over the global energy system is markedly increasing. It focuses on the countries that make up the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN): Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam.
Energy markets have been turbulent since the publication of the last edition of this report in 2022. At that time, ASEAN countries had started to emerge from the shock of the Covid-19 pandemic when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine sent energy prices soaring. This period of disruption and volatility has left an impact on Southeast Asia – a dynamic region experiencing strong economic growth that now needs to chart its energy future in a more uncertain environment. The Outlook features analysis of the challenges and the opportunities that lie ahead, based on the latest data across all fuels and technologies.
