Energy and climate ministers from around the world met in Paris on 13 and 14 February for the IEA’s 2024 Ministerial Meeting to take stock of the latest developments in energy markets, policies and transitions – and to set the Agency’s strategic direction for the coming years. It was also the occasion to mark the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the IEA, with a number of special events, including a series of High-Level Dialogues and an Energy Innovation Forum.
Special guests included European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry and former Irish President Mary Robinson, as well as Ministers from the IEA’s 31 member countries and from partner countries across the world, including Colombia, Costa Rica, Egypt, Kenya, Senegal, Singapore and Ukraine. CEOs of major energy companies and leaders from finance and civil society also participated.
This meeting came at a crucial time for energy markets and clean energy transitions globally. Fifty years on from the founding of the IEA amid the 1970s oil shock, this milestone event offered the opportunity to reflect on how the global energy system has changed and how to tackle the energy and climate challenges the world faces today and in the coming decades.
