Pledges to Progress 2025 Pledges to Progress Company Assessment
The assessment shown below sets out actions reported by 116 oil and gas companies to achieve the goals set out in the Oil and Gas Decarbonisation Charter, agreed at COP28. It is a baseline assessment, in that the evaluations for each metric are based on public company reporting published in 2024, which often rely on data and progress from 2023, i.e. before the OGDC was launched. This is not an assessment of environmental performance. It tracks 25 specific aspects of target-setting, implementation strategies and disclosure, based on a framework put together by the International Energy Agency (IEA), the…

World Energy Outlook 2022 An updated roadmap to Net Zero Emissions by 2050
…generation reach an all-time high, a record more than 500 terawatt-hours (TWh) above the level in 2020. Key findings In 2021, the IEA published its report Net Zero by 2050: A Roadmap for the Global Energy Sector. However, in the short time since then much has changed. The global economy has rebounded from the Covid-19 pandemic, and the first global energy crisis has seen world energy prices touching record levels in many markets, bringing energy security concerns to the fore.In 2021, emissions rose by a record 1.9 Gt to reach 36.6 Gt, driven by extraordinarily rapid post…

…forecast period. Global CO2 intensity decline accelerates as low-carbon generation rapidly expands Global CO2-intensity from electricity generation contracted by an estimated 3% in 2025, after a 2.6% reduction in in 2024. An increasing share of renewables and robust output in nuclear energy generation are driving this trend. We forecast CO2 intensity to fall even faster over our forecast period, at an annual average rate of 3.7%, down from 435 g CO2/kWh in 2025 to 360 g CO2/kWh in 2030.Many regions are expected to register substantial declines in CO2 intensity in the 2026-2030 outlook. The European…

…in 2024, reaching a sales share of over 6%. Sales in Africa also more than doubled, too, mostly thanks to growing sales in Egypt and Morocco, though electric cars still represent less than 1% of total car sales across the continent. Policy support and relatively affordable electric car imports from China played a central role in increasing sales in some emerging electric vehicle (EV) markets, accounting for 85% of electric car sales in both Brazil and Thailand, for example. Across all emerging economies outside of China, Chinese imports made up 75% of the increase in electric car sales in 2024…

…and freight activity have risen along with incomes, but this comes at a cost: Nearly all of Georgia’s transport fuel is imported, exposing the country to price and security risks. Air quality ranks 62nd of 134 countries, with pollution causing about 130 premature deaths per 100 000 people – almost triple the global average. Road fatalities totalled 442 in 2022, more than twice the rate in the European Union, while 230 deaths each year can be linked to road-related air pollution.Public concern is mounting over the impact of a growing vehicle fleet. Civil society groups note that expanding roads…

…most electrified road transport segment. Electrification of 2/3-wheelers stagnated at about 15% in 2024.The electric bus and truck market continued to expand, growing by 30% and 75%, respectively. Sales of electric vehicles are highest in China, where around 1 in 10 cars is now electric. Success statements Zero-emission light-duty vehicle pledges are translated into policies, and more key markets join heavy-duty vehicle pledges Why is it important to achieve the success statement to reach the sectoral breakthrough goal? While significant recent growth in electric vehicle (EV) sales is encouraging, it remains uneven across geographies…

…30% compared to 2024, and more than 7 times greater than in 2020. Light‑duty vehicles remained the dominant segment, representing more than 85% of the 2025 EV battery deployment. However, the fastest growth came from electric trucks, for which battery demand more than doubled – largely thanks to a sharp acceleration in sales in the People’s Republic of China (hereafter, “China”) (see One in four trucks sold in China in 2025 was electric). As a result, electric trucks accounted for about 8% of global EV battery deployment in 2025, up from less than 5% in 2024.Regionally, EV battery deployment…

…coal displacement in the power sector (33%) and natural gas displacement in buildings (9%). Geographies of demand change significantly in both the STEPS and APS. While Europe and North America currently make up just under 60% of demand for biogases, EMDEs constitute the new majority by 2035 in the STEPs. This is driven by China, which accounts for 40% of the global production increase in that period. Demand roughly triples in Brazil and India as well. Demand growth is accompanied by fuller utilisation of feedstock potential, of which only 4% is used today. Municipal waste, as the cheapest feedstock…

Global Energy Review 2026 Technology: Battery storage
Battery storage is the fastest growing power technology today. In 2025, 108 GW of new battery storage capacity was deployed worldwide, 40% more than in 2024. Installed capacity is now eleven times higher than in 2021. Lithium‑iron phosphate (LFP) batteries now account for around 90% of deployments; while less energy‑dense than rival chemistries commonly used in EVs, LFP batteries are typically cheaper and better suited to more frequent cycling. Just five years ago, the market share of LFP batteries in deployments was well below 50%. Around 80% of new battery capacity in 2025 was utility‑scale. The remainder was behind-the…
