Powering Ireland’s Energy Future
…this transition, supported by a detailed security study on the electricity supply mix.The analysis sets out five pillars for policy action: Establishing a cross-sectoral energy security strategy for the 2030s; delivering the enabling infrastructure to accommodate the growth of electricity demand and supply; accelerating the delivery of generation capacity, storage and demand-side flexibility; enabling secure system operation under high renewable penetration; advancing workforce skills, strengthening partnerships and facilitating electrification. Ireland can build on its progress in power system transformation to set an example of secure integration of large shares of variable renewable generation while safeguarding energy security.

Financing the Modernisation of Power Systems Beyond Coal
…systems in Southeast Asia, even as governments have committed to reducing coal‑related emissions. Rapid electricity demand growth, alongside coal’s role in system adequacy, reliability and energy security, complicates efforts to accelerate coal transitions. Recent volatility in international gas markets has reinforced the short‑term economic and security value of existing coal assets, adding complexity to national transition strategies. The region’s young coal fleet also implies substantial long‑term emissions if plants continue operating at current utilisation rates.Against this backdrop, new approaches are being explored to support coal transitions while maintaining secure and reliable power systems. This report examines the…

Financing Clean Energy in Africa Mobilising capital for a sustainable future
…an important capital source, although investor expectations of project size and risk–return profile may mean they require blending with concessional sources in riskier areas. Investors can provide debt via the sustainable bond market and refinancing tools can be used to replace public or DFI capital in brownfield assets with private sources. Private equity and venture capital also play a key role in funding start-ups to support the development of local industry, including in relation to off-grid electricity and clean cooking solutions.Although a small player now, over the long term domestic markets are fundamental to energy sector…

Oil 2025
…forecast to 2030 Global oil markets have so far had a turbulent 2025. Heightened trade tensions and uncertainty have weighed on the world economy and, by extension, oil demand growth. Combined with the recent OPEC+ decision to accelerate the unwinding of oil production curbs that have been in place for several years, these factors have recently pushed international oil prices to four-year low in April and early May. At the same time, shifts in energy policies are affecting oil producers and consumers alike, with oil supply security remaining high on the international energy policy agenda.Oil 2025 looks beyond…

The Implications of Oil and Gas Field Decline Rates
…and, by extension, for market balances. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has long examined this issue, and a detailed understanding of decline rates is at the heart of IEA modelling and analysis, underpinning the insights provided by the scenarios in the World Energy Outlook. This new report – based on analysis of the production records of around 15 000 oil and gas fields around the world – explores the implications of accelerating decline rates, growing reliance on unconventional resources, and evolving project development patterns for the global oil and gas supply landscape, for energy security and for investment. It also provides regional insights…

World Energy Outlook 2025 Executive summary
…large surplus of supply over demand.Countries are prioritising energy security and affordability but are reaching for different levers to achieve them. Some, including many fuel-importing countries, lean towards renewables and efficiency as solutions. Others focus more on ensuring ample supplies of traditional fuels. There are fractures in the international system and uncertainties over the outlook for trade, but energy trade is more important than ever. Abundant supplies of oil, solar panels, batteries and, before long, liquefied natural gas (LNG) create strong incentives for producers to seek out international markets. There is less momentum than before behind national and…

Gaining an Edge Energy demand and competitiveness
…improved output. Investing in efficiency can also help firms to create or safeguard jobs, lower emissions, and achieve a more durable competitive advantage. In the industrial sector, which accounts for 21% of world GDP (worth over USD 20 trillion), growing energy demand and rising trade pressures are placing energy – and the role of energy efficiency – at the heart of discussions on competitiveness. For highly energy-intensive industries, managing energy costs can be a question of survival. These heavier industries (such as chemicals, metals, pulp and paper, refining and cement) are characterised by high fixed costs and capital-intensive processes, where…
