…reintroduction of purchase subsidies in those two countries. Other large-volume markets saw growth in electric car sales as well. In Poland, sales increased by 140%, while the Netherlands saw a 25% rise. In France, sales volumes were similar to 2024. Europe as a whole overtook China as the fastest growing major market for electric cars. In the United Kingdom, sales rose by over 25%. In Norway, battery electric cars reached a record 96% share of all car sales. Electric medium- and heavy- freight truck sales also started to pick up in Europe, increasing by around 40% and reaching a…

Global Methane Tracker 2026 Key findings
No sign that global energy-related methane emissions fell in 2025 despite progress in some areas The fossil fuel sector accounts for around 35% of methane emissions from human activity, yet there is still no sign that methane emissions from fossil fuel operations are falling, despite well-known and proven mitigation pathways. Oil, gas and coal production output reached record highs in 2025, and the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that methane emissions from these activities total 124 million tonnes (Mt) a year: oil is the largest source at 45 Mt, followed by coal at 43 Mt, and natural gas at 36 Mt. A…

Universal Access to Clean Cooking in Africa Executive summary
…s energy-related CO2 emissions today. Recent momentum creates a pivotal moment for clean cooking in Africa Policy and financing commitments made at the 2024 Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa are being delivered. The International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Summit secured USD 2.2 billion in commitments from public and private sectors and policy pledges from twelve African governments. Since then, USD 470 million has been disbursed, well above the annual average required to ensure the Summit’s financing commitments are fully delivered by 2030.Most people in sub-Saharan Africa live in countries that have accelerated their clean cooking efforts since 2024…

…reduced energy poverty and improved air quality). Tracking these benefits can help highlight and communicate the positive effects of clean energy transitions across different population groups. This year, the South African G20 Presidency and Brazilian COP30 Presidency have prioritised just and inclusive energy transitions and this Indicators Handbook has been developed to support and promote these efforts. The Indicators Handbook is based on the voluntary G20 Principles for Just and Inclusive Transitions, endorsed by G20 leaders in November 2024. The principles, which reflect varying perspectives, contexts and experiences, form a framework for approaching transitions that maximises benefits and mitigates the…

Global EV Outlook 2025 Trends in other light-duty electric vehicles
…where 2/3Ws are widely used for daily transportation. Another year of receding electric two-wheeler sales in China masks steady growth elsewhere in Asia In China, falling sales of electric 2Ws in 2024 were the product of an overall decline in the 2W market, yet the country remains the world’s largest market for electric 2Ws. Electric models have accounted for more than half of 2W sales since 2020, with sales totalling about 7 million in 2024. Sluggishness in China’s 2W market reflects an increasing preference for cars for personal transport, and may also be a sign that consumers…

Global Methane Tracker 2025 Key findings
…production of oil, gas and coal, combined with limited mitigation efforts, has kept emissions above 120 million tonnes (Mt) annually. Abandoned wells and mines – included in this year’s Global Methane Tracker for the first time – contributed around 8 Mt to these emissions in 2024. Bioenergy production and consumption results in a further 20 Mt of methane, largely from the incomplete combustion of traditional biomass used in cooking and heating in developing economies. The agriculture and waste sectors are also major sources of methane emissions, but fossil fuel supply offers the greatest potential for immediate reductions in methane emissions. Solutions that lower…

Gas Market Report, Q1-2026 Executive summary
…While supply fundamentals remained tight in the first half of the year, strong LNG production growth gradually eased market conditions starting from July. Following a relatively strong increase in 2024, global gas demand growth slowed markedly in 2025 due to a combination of weaker industrial activity and relatively high spot LNG prices in the first half of the year. Market opening reforms continued to gather pace in Asia while the European Union reached a historic decision to phase out Russian natural gas imports by November 2027 at the latest.Global LNG supply growth is set to accelerate further in 2026…

Financing Electricity Access in Africa Executive summary
…barely kept pace with population growth, leaving the continent far behind the targets set by African governments and the international community. Progress in reducing the absolute number of people without access has stalled in recent years, with the rate of improvement failing to fully recover to pre-pandemic levels. Fewer than 19 million people gained access in both 2023 and 2024, compared with 23 million in 2019.Even when connections are available, high costs often place electricity out of reach for low-income households. A cost-effective mix of grid expansion and decentralised solutions, such as mini-grids and stand…

…of global fossil fuel production, with the largest initiative being the Global Methane Pledge (GMP). Countries that participate in the GMP commit to work together to collectively reduce global methane emissions from human activity (across all sources, not limited to energy) by at least 30% below 2020 levels by 2030. Cutting the world’s methane emissions by 30% over the next decade would have the same impact on global warming by mid-century as immediately shifting the global transport sector to net zero CO2 emissions. In 2024, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Guatemala and Madagascar joined the GMP, bringing the total number of…
