Global Energy Review 2026 Oil
Oil demand growth remained subdued in 2025 Oil demand increased in 2025 by 0.65 mb/d (million barrels per day) or 1.2 EJ, but this 0.7% rise marked a further slowdown from 2024’s already-muted 0.75 mb/d of growth. The increase in both years was in line with IEA projections. The 2025 increase fell well short of the 2010-19 average annual rise of 1.4 mb/d, offering further evidence of a structural deceleration in oil markets. This slowdown mainly reflected weaker growth in petrochemical feedstock use. Demand for naphtha, liquefied petroleum gas…

Global Methane Tracker 2026 Key findings
…coal production output reached record highs in 2025, and the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that methane emissions from these activities total 124 million tonnes (Mt) a year: oil is the largest source at 45 Mt, followed by coal at 43 Mt, and natural gas at 36 Mt. A further 20 Mt comes from bioenergy production and consumption, largely from the incomplete combustion of traditional biomass used for cooking and heating in developing economies.Although IEA-estimated fossil fuel emissions remain at very high levels, satellite and inventory data from 2025 point to progress in some countries. This includes fewer super-emitting events detected from…

Unlocking Ukraine’s Hydrogen Opportunity: A Roadmap Policy recommendations for the coming 2-3 years
…electricity costs, which are the dominant driver for hydrogen production costs. Undertake the preparatory analyses that will form the basis for later deployment Such studies require relatively little investment when compared to large-scale projects, but they are essential to inform the work done in later years. They can support progress without requiring large commitments and provide a window onto market development. Preparatory studies can reduce uncertainties by including a material assessment of the gas transmission network, improving project cost estimates and providing visibility on the policy instruments that could be used to promote hydrogen deployment. Analysis could include, for…

Global Methane Tracker 2025 Key findings
…inventories are underreporting emissions: our estimate of total energy-related methane emissions globally is about 80% higher than the total reported by countries to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This gap is narrowest in Europe, where countries regularly submit inventories and some producers report emissions based on measured data. While existing data and estimates can serve as a basis for action to cut methane emissions, improved data will lead to more efficient resource allocation and better confidence in emissions-reduction efforts. Methane data is improving, but more progress on abatement is possible even with an imperfect understanding…

World Energy Investment 2025 Africa
…energy projects in Africa has fallen by approximately one-third in the last ten years, reaching USD 20 billion in 2024, largely due to a reduction of more than 85% in spending by Chinese DFIs. While representing a small share of overall spending, the public sector and DFIs are particularly important for projects in nascent markets, using new technologies or in commercially unviable areas where it can be challenging for private sector investment relying on concessional funds to ensure profitability. Against this backdrop, private equity and venture capital play a key role in financing early-stage businesses, especially in energy…

Oil 2025 Executive summary
…oil executives are recalibrating investment plans. However, oil prices have since rebounded after an exchange of air strikes between Israel and Iran started on 13 June 2025. With geopolitical and economic uncertainties affecting oil producers and consumers alike, oil supply security remains high on the international energy policy agenda. Oil markets are going through a fundamental transformation as the drivers of global oil supply and demand patterns shift. Over the past decade, oil market dynamics have been defined by the parallel growth in US oil supply and Chinese oil demand. From 2015 to 2024, the United States accounted for 90…

…and CO2 standards, such as China and the European Union. Some countries in Southeast Asia – including Viet Nam, the largest EV market in the region – have already announced plans to expand or extend EV tax incentives as part of their response to the current energy crisis. Electric cars are poised to make up a greater share of total car sales in 2026 The current high oil price environment is drawing consumer attention to the economic benefits of driving EVs. Electric cars generally have lower running costs than internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, mainly due to their higher efficiency. The recent rise…

As an early leader in setting out an ambitious energy transition, France legislated a net zero emissions target for 2050 in its 2019 Energy and Climate Act and aims at reducing by 55% its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. A national low-carbon strategy with 5-year carbon budgets and a multiannual plan for energy investments implement the long-term target.
Acknowledging the need to maintain electricity security in the longer term and a low-carbon footprint France invests in efficiency, six new nuclear power plants and renewable energy, notably offshore wind…- Overview
