Universal Access to Clean Cooking in Africa Clean cooking: State of play and recent progressClean cooking: State of play and recent progress

Nearing a turning point? A lack of clean cooking continues to have profound impacts on public health, women’s equality, economic development, and the environment. Globally, a lack of clean cooking contributes to around 3 million premature deaths each year, with women and children facing the greatest exposure, and accounts for annual emissions equivalent to 1.2 Gt CO2-eq, roughly equivalent to the global CO2 emissions from international aviation and shipping. The challenge is most severe in sub-Saharan Africa, where four out of five households lack clean cooking access today. To spur global action on the issue, the…

Advancing Methane Emissions Reductions by National Oil Companies

National oil companies (NOCs) are responsible for around half of all global oil and gas production today and their actions strongly influence methane abatement prospects. More than 30 NOCs have joined the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC) and are engaging in initiatives to tackle methane emissions and flaring. There is a major opportunity for NOCs looking to implement best practices in methane management to learn from the experience of peers in order to deploy strategies that are adapted and tailored to their circumstances. Best practices include adopting measures to limit flaring and venting, implementing leak detection and repair programmes…

                United Kingdom

The United Kingdom has been an early player in the energy transition, being among the first countries to set a net zero target by 2050 and to put in place carbon budgets. UK emissions have already fallen by around 50% since 1990, indicating a strong start. Looking ahead, an important pillar of the energy transition will be decarbonising the power sector through sizeable new investments in renewables and nuclear while also focusing on new technologies such as CCUS, hydrogen and small modular reactors. As a historic oil and gas producer, the UK is looking to address declining North Sea production…

Mainland China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the National Energy Administration announced action plan to decarbonize coal power plants

The NDRC has asked for provincial governments as well as state-owned enterprises to voluntarily nominate coal projects that can be pilots for this program, which is the first time these technologies are being deployed in a centralized national scheme targeting coal-fired power plants. The test runs will help cut carbon intensities of coal plants by around 20% by 2025 and 50% by 2027 from the average industry levels in 2023. Cofiring renewable ammonia is one of the decarbonizing pathways that will be tested among biomass cofiring and carbon capture and storage. For cofiring of both renewable ammonia and…

…temporary shutdown and decommissioning of coal mines.Paragraph 10 requires operators to develop an emergency response plan for each mine. In accordance with paragraph 115 of the Rules, the concentration of methane in the mine air is limited to the values defined by Annex 4 to the Rules. Mines in which methane is detected are classified as dangerous. Furthermore, mines in which methane has been released or is being released must be apply a set of operational standards set for coal with elevated gas contents. According to Paragraph 149, all coal mines are divided into five categories according to the…
