USD 15 billion deal with Air Liquids to turn coal into fuels
Indonesia has signed a deal worth USD 15 billion with Air Products and Chemicals, an American gas processing and chemical company, to develop a coal gasification industry in the country. The deal was described as “long-term investment agreement” aimed at converting “low-value coal into high-value-added chemical products” such as methanol. The deal reflects Indonesia’s desire to move away from coal-fired power plants but at the same time coal gasification can help alleviate the country’s fuel imports.

Law 416/2019 on the ban of the use of coal for energy production
On 27 February 2019, Finland adopted a law aiming to ban the use of coal for power generation after 1 May 2029. In addition, there are subsidies for companies that implement the change before 2026. The energy use of coal ended in Spring 2025, four years before the deadline of May 2029 as required by this law.
