Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan has one of the highest energy self-sufficiency ratios in the world as a major crude oil and natural gas producer. While the renewable sector has not seen as much attention, the government is now looking to stimulate investment and accelerate deployment, allowing for diversification of domestic energy consumption. In addition, the government is working on a new energy strategy that will set the stage for further policy shifts. Azerbaijan is part of the EU4Energy Programme, an initiative focused on evidence-based policymaking for the energy sector.

National Climate Resilience Assessment for Algeria
…diverging precipitation trends between the northern coast and southern desert areas. The densely populated north is expected to experience steep declines in precipitation, increasing risks for droughts and wildfires. Droughts amplify water stress of critical energy infrastructure, and wildfires threaten electricity networks, power plants, and oil and gas operations. According to the Algerian General Directorate of Forests, about 3 000 fire outbreaks were recorded annually over the period 2010‑2019, burning nearly 310 km2 a year. At the same time, Algeria’s desert regions could see an increase in extreme precipitation events, flash floods and riverbed overflows in a high-emissions scenario which…

Strengthening supply chains can improve resilience and reduce economic security risks for key energy technologies
…of the global economy. The market for them may well double over the next decade,” said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. “While seeking to capitalise on this growth, governments and industry need to strengthen supply chain resilience and industrial competitiveness to reduce geographic concentration and ensure that the increasing deployment of these technologies also delivers energy and economic security.”Under governments’ current policies, the global market for key energy technologies may grow from nearly $1.2 trillion today to around $2 trillion by 2035, roughly equivalent to the size of the global oil market last year, according to the report. IEA releases major update to tracker of government responses to energy impacts of Middle East conflict
…a result, the tracker features details on 109 countries that have implemented energy-related measures in response to the crisis. The tracker, which is being updated regularly, complements the IEA’s broader work to support governments through the current crisis. The IEA has also released a report that presents a menu of demand-side measures that governments, businesses and households can take to shelter consumers from energy price pressures. And in March, the IEA announced the largest-ever coordinated release of emergency oil stocks in the Agency’s history. It continues to monitor the situation closely in coordination with leaders around the world.
