Energy Efficiency 2024 What is required to scale up energy efficiency investments by 2030?
…appliances for the first time, investments in technical efficiency dominate. This involves improving the performance of buildings through better insulation and appliances, including heating and cooling. Transport electrification also plays a role, particularly through electric motorbikes and three-wheelers. In sub-Saharan Africa, the switch to clean cooking fuels dominates the mitigation measures. In advanced economies, the bulk of efficiency improvements come from replacing older infrastructure with newer, more efficient and increasingly electricity-dominated systems. This includes a large-scale diffusion of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure as well as heat pumps in buildings and industry. Retrofits of energy-intensive…

Energy Efficiency 2024 How is the dumping of inefficient equipment affecting efficiency progress?
Differing regulatory frameworks open the door to inefficient equipment dumping The efficiency of appliances available for purchase varies substantially across different markets globally. IEA market data shows that between emerging markets alone the differences are very large. For example, the median efficiency of air conditioners in the sub-Saharan Africa region is only 3.1 W/W, while it is 4.7 in Southeast Asia, close to the 5‑6.5 W/W the NZE Scenario foresees by 2030. At the same time, household budgets for the purchase and use of appliances differ strongly due to global wealth and income inequalities. The result…

Universal Access to Clean Cooking in Africa Clean cooking: State of play and recent progress
…public and private sector commitments, alongside pledges by twelve African governments to implement new clean cooking policies. Based on tracking by the IEA, USD 470 million has been disbursed against the commitments as of the end of June 2025. This exceeds the annualised disbursements needed to fulfil these commitments by 2030. Eight of the twelve countries that made pledges at the IEA Summit implemented new clean cooking policies since 2024, with Tanzania and Kenya demonstrating the largest increase in policy coverage since 2024. Amongst the African population that does not have access to clean cooking, three-quarters today live in…

Universal Access to Clean Cooking in Africa Implications and policy considerations
…and investments. Technical assistance and concessional finance can help, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises that play an important role expanding clean cooking where commercial players will not. At current prices, the cost of gaining clean cooking access would exceed 10% of household monthly income for nearly 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa. Affordability varies significantly by fuel type, but financial incentives and business models that allow consumers to make purchases in small increments play an important role across all market segments. Some measures include value added tax (VAT) and import tariff exemptions for clean cooking stoves, fuels…

…also growing in countries that have an unreliable electricity grid. In South Africa and Pakistan, for instance, uptake in commercial and large-scale off-grid solar PV systems is rising rapidly, improving electricity access.Compared with 2019-2024, our forecast expects cumulative onshore wind capacity additions to increase 45% over 2025-2030, reaching 732 GW. Despite recent challenges concerning supply chain bottlenecks, inflation, and long permitting and grid connection wait times, we expect strong onshore wind expansion, as policies in both advanced and developing countries have partly addressed these barriers. Annual additions are expected to rise in Africa, the Middle East…

Indicators Handbook for Just and Inclusive Energy Transitions Introduction
…economic benefits (e.g. new decent jobs, reduced energy poverty and improved air quality). Tracking these benefits can help highlight and communicate the positive effects of clean energy transitions across different population groups. This year, the South African G20 Presidency and Brazilian COP30 Presidency have prioritised just and inclusive energy transitions and this Indicators Handbook has been developed to support and promote these efforts. The Indicators Handbook is based on the voluntary G20 Principles for Just and Inclusive Transitions, endorsed by G20 leaders in November 2024. The principles, which reflect varying perspectives, contexts and experiences, form a framework for approaching…

Congo
In Congo, 3 out of 5 people do not have access to electricity. As a country with a very low population density, Congo faces particularly severe challenges in bringing energy of any kind to its rural communities.
