Last updated: 11 December 2023

The first New Caledonia Energy Transition Plan (2016-2021) sets out 91 measures to encourage the energy transition of provinces and municipalities. The measures are in the form of practical sheets that detail the actors involved (private or public), an estimated cost, and a phasing in the short, medium, and long term, aiming to ensure the coherence of the plan. It was established by New Caledonia’s local government.
The measures are intended to achieve the following main objectives:

  • Reduce energy consumption;
  • Increase the share of renewable energy;
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

 For the mining and metallurgy sectors, it includes the following action levers:

  • Energy efficiency of processes (benchmark study of energy performance, ISO 50001);
  • Inclusion of renewable production in the energy mix of metallurgy plants;
  • Assessment and reduction plan of GHG emissions;
  • Emissions offsetting plan.
