Horizon 2020: Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials

Among the variety of research topics and projects funded by Horizon 2020 is Societal Challenge 5: 'Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials' (SC5): transition to circular economy business models and practices, and sustainable sourcing of raw materials, also from secondary sources. 
With a budget of EUR 360 million, activities particular to raw materials include:

1. Research and innovation activities to investigate new products, processes, services, and business models to use raw materials more efficiently;
2. Activities to facilitate the use of secondary raw materials while reducing potential adverse health and environmental impacts;
3. Support for the sustainable and responsible extraction and sourcing of raw materials; and 
4. Support for the recycling of complex products containing significant amounts of critical raw materials.
