The IEA works to ensure reliable, affordable and clean energy for its 30 member countries and beyond. Our mission is guided by four main areas of focus: energy security, economic development, environmental awareness and engagement worldwide.
Management of the IEA Secretariat is headed by Executive Director Dr Fatih Birol.
The Governing Board is the IEA’s main decision making body, supported by a range of standing groups, committees, and affiliated groups from business and industry.
A country must meet a number of criteria related to energy security to join the IEA. The IEA currently has 30 member countries, 1 accession country, and 7 association countries.
The IEA was founded in 1974 to help countries collectively respond to oil supply disruptions. While this remains a key aspect of its work, the IEA has evolved and expanded.
