Financing Electricity Access in Africa State of play
Understanding electricity access financing As of 2024, around 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa (47% of the population) did not have access to electricity. With electrification barely keeping up with population growth rates, progress remains far off the pace envisaged both by African governments and international organisations. Reaching universal access requires a cost-effective, multi-technology approach, with grid extension, mini-grids and stand-alone systems all playing a role to ensure affordable service provision to unelectrified communities. Notably, financing has been one of the primary impediments to growth. For the first time, the IEA has tracked electricity access financing commitments…

Tracking SDG7: The Energy Progress Report, 2025
…Agency (IEA), the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), the World Bank, and the World Health Organization (WHO)—the five custodian agencies responsible for tracking progress toward SDG 7. Figure ES.1 offers a snapshot of the primary indicators for 2025.Progress toward 2030 targets remains off track, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, owing in part to the Covid-19 pandemic and 2022 energy crisis. Nonetheless, globally, policy progress and technological advances have shown some promising results, notably in boosting renewable energy deployment and achieving modest (though still insufficient) improvements in energy efficiency. Elements of…

National Climate Resilience Assessment for Mozambique
…guards against some of these risks. Mozambique envisages the deployment of 1 GW of new solar PV and up to 0.5 GW of onshore wind capacity by 2030. Considering changing precipitation patterns and risks for floods and droughts in siting new projects would also be important to reduce the risk of asset damage and loss.Heavy precipitation and floods could also pose a risk to the secure operation of Mozambique’s coal mines. As Africa’s second largest coal producer, Mozambique’s economy strongly relies on these exports, which made up 13% of GDP in 2023. Mozambique plans to give natural…

Wired for water: How electrification is transforming desalination
…the global population live today. Around 85% live in emerging market and developing economies. Major population growth centres are already affected: in India, over 70% of the population lives in highly stressed areas, particularly in the northeast, and the number of people facing water stress today equals the country’s total population in the early 2000s.The Middle East and North Africa, home to 490 million people in 2024, faces extreme water stress. Around 75% of the population lived in water-stressed areas in 2000, and despite slightly faster population growth in relatively less stressed zones – such as northern Morocco…
