                Battery Breakthrough Initiative

In the May 2024 Federal Budget, the Australian Government announced the $523.2 million Battery Breakthrough Initiative to strengthen economic resilience and critical battery manufacturing capabilities. This initiative will provide production-linked incentives for high-value battery products in Australia’s areas of competitive advantage, in line with the government’s Future Made in Australia agenda.

National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Regulations (NGER) 2008

The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) Scheme was introduced by the Australian Government in 2007 to provide data and accounting in relation to the greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption and production of covered entities (generally large corporations). The Scheme’s legislated objectives are to:inform policy-making and the Australian public;help meet Australia’s international reporting obligations; andprovide a single national reporting framework for energy production and consumption and emissions reporting.  From 1 July 2016, NGER also serves as the reporting and compliance framework for the Australian Government's Safeguard Mechanism. The Safeguard Mechanism, which forms part…

                National Energy Productivity Plan

In December 2015, the Council of Australian Governments(COAG) Energy Council launched a new National Energy Productivity Plan (NEPP) to meet a commitment to an energy productivity target of 40 percent improvement between 2015 and 2030. Australia is expected to increase its annual productivity from 1.5 to 2.3 percent per annum to reach its energy productivity target.  The NEPP is expected to contribute more than a quarter of the savings required to meet Australia's 2030 greenhouse gas emissions reduction target. The NEPP will complement existing policies such as the Emissions Reduction Fund. The NEPP covers all energy…

                (Tasmania) Gas Safety Regulations 2019

This regulation requires operators to comply with certain standards issued by the Standards Association Australia and the Standards Association New Zealand, including:  - AS3961 on the storage and handling of liquified natural gas; - AS/NZS 1596 on the storange and handling of LP gas; - AS 2885 on pipelines, gas and liquid petroleum; and- AS 3645 on gas equipment requirements.  Many of these provisions relate to the maintance and operation of equipment to contain natural gas. While the focus is safety, many of these measures could also limit methane emissions.  The regulation also sets forth requirements for the development of 'safety…

Asia-Pacific Partnership for Clean Development and Climate

The Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate (APP) brings together Australia, Canada, China, India, Japan, South Korea and the United States to address the challenges of climate change, energy security and air pollution in a way that encourages economic development and reduces poverty. The APP represents around half of the world's emissions, energy use, GDP and population, and is an important initiative that engages, for the first time, the key greenhouse gas emitting countries in the Asia Pacific region. With its focus on the development, deployment and transfer of cleaner, more efficient technologies, the APP is also…

                Bilateral Climate Action Partnerships (CAP)

Under the Bilateral Climate Change Partnership Program, Australia has partnerships with China, South Africa, New Zealand, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Japan, and the United States. These partnerships provide opportunities for building stronger political relationships and influencing other countries climate change policies at the highest level. Through these partnerships, Australia supports practical activities that address climate change issues of mutual concern. Our partnerships with developing countries aim to build their capacity to tackle climate change alongside sustainable development.

                Built Environment Sector Plan

The Built Environment Sector Plan (BESP) is one of 6 sector plans under the Australian Government’s Net Zero Plan, which charts Australia’s pathway to net zero by 2050. The Net Zero Plan outlines five priority areas for action: decarbonising and expanding the electricity network, electrification wherever possible, switching to low–carbon fuels, technology innovation and carbon removals.

                Brazil

Brazil’s energy policies measure up well against the world’s most urgent energy challenges. Access to electricity across the country is almost universal and renewables meet almost 45% of primary energy demand, making Brazil’s energy sector one of the least carbon-intensive in the world. Total primary energy demand has doubled in Brazil since 1990, led by strong growth in electricity consumption and in demand for transport fuels on the back of robust economic growth and a burgeoning middle class.
Large hydropower plants account for around 80% of domestic electricity generation, making the Brazilian electricity mix one of…
