Global Energy and Climate Model Accelerating Clean Cooking and Electricity Services Scenario (ACCESS)
…without access to basic modern energy services. Today nearly 2 billion people lack access to clean cooking and 730 million people lack access to electricity. Millions of households, businesses and public institutions such as clinics and schools operate without reliable modern energy. This limits productivity and hinders socioeconomic development. It also perpetuates the use of traditional biomass, with damaging consequences for health and the environment. The Accelerating Clean Cooking and Electricity Services Scenario (ACCESS) charts a path to achieve universal access to clean cooking and electricity based on the best rates of progress achieved historically. The ACCESS prioritises cost-effective and proven…

COP28 Tripling Renewable Capacity Pledge 2025: Update Key Findings
…One hundred-plus countries took policy action over the last year, with half increasing their renewable ambitions Fifty-one countries, have raised their renewable capacity ambitions for 2030, signalling growing national commitments to higher deployment. Conversely, 21 countries reduced their ambitions due to changing policy priorities or electricity demand projections that were lower than expected, while 29 countries maintained the same level of ambition in the new documents released. Concurrently, 49 countries did not release any new policy documents related to renewable power. This update also expands the country coverage from last year including 39 additional countries, reaching 189 in total…

What Next for the Global Car Industry The importance of the growth in EV sales for the car industry
Highlights In 2024, more than one-fifth of all cars sold globally were electric. Policies remain key to growth in many regions, although falling prices make affordability an increasingly important driver. In China, two-thirds of battery electric cars sold in 2024 were cheaper than internal combustion engine (ICE) equivalents. In other major markets like Europe and North America, electric cars remain more expensive on average. But prices have been falling in many emerging economies on the back of affordable Chinese imports; in Southeast Asia, this helped push the share of electric car sales to 9% in 2024, almost double…

Global Hydrogen Review 2026 Policy
…the Automotive Package. By early June 2026, transposition of the EU Renewable Energy Directive into national legislation had been finalised in 13 member states for the transport sector, creating demand for more than 575 ktpa of low-emissions hydrogen.China announced a city clusters programme with a total funding of USD 1.1 billion, aiming to diversify hydrogen uses beyond cars and introducing targets for an end-use hydrogen price of USD 3.6/kg, striving for USD 2.2/kg and 100 000 FCEVs by 2030.Japan had selected six winners of its contracts for difference scheme as of late May 2026, adding up to…

Global Hydrogen Review 2025 Production prospects to 2030
…EMDEs), where regulatory frameworks remain nascent and access to capital is particularly challenging. However, more than half of the potential production in the pipeline has low potential or is uncertain to be operative by 2030. Almost half of these projects are very large electrolysis developments in EMDEs that may have access to low-cost renewable electricity but face high barriers to development due to the lack of regulatory readiness, clear offtake frameworks and reliable financing channels. Even with rapid improvements to these conditions, the sheer scale of some announced projects makes it unlikely they will be commissioned before 2030, meaning…

Global EV Outlook 2025 Trends in other light-duty electric vehicles
Electric two- and three-wheelers Contrasting regional trends mean global sales of electric two- and three-wheelers remain at around 15% Two- and three-wheelers (2/3Ws) remained the most electrified road transport segment in 2024, with more than 9% of the global fleet now electric. The global sales share of electric models remained at around 15% in 2024 with total electric model sales reaching 10 million. The electric sales share stalled in 2024, mostly due to the shrinking Chinese electric 2/3W market, although growth in other regions was steady. China, India and Southeast Asia remain the world’s largest…

Energy Efficiency 2024 What is required to scale up energy efficiency investments by 2030?
…Transport electrification also plays a role, particularly through electric motorbikes and three-wheelers. In sub-Saharan Africa, the switch to clean cooking fuels dominates the mitigation measures. In advanced economies, the bulk of efficiency improvements come from replacing older infrastructure with newer, more efficient and increasingly electricity-dominated systems. This includes a large-scale diffusion of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure as well as heat pumps in buildings and industry. Retrofits of energy-intensive buildings – such as hospitals, shopping malls, office buildings, schools, and universities – as well as district heating and cooling also offer quick wins to accelerate energy efficiency…

China’s Official Energy Finance in Emerging and Developing Economies Case 1. Uzbekistan 1-GW Solar PV Project
…and construction across both sites.Led by Energy China, this project is one of the country’s first large-scale solar projects and plays a meaningful role in bridging the investment gap. Once fully operational, the two sites will generate an estimated 2 400 GWh of solar electricity annually – about 32% of Uzbekistan’s 2023 consumption – while avoiding 2.4 Mt CO2 and reducing natural gas use by roughly 520 million cubic metres per year. These savings directly support Uzbekistan’s goals to diversify generation, strengthen winter reliability and reduce dependence on domestic gas. Financing model and China’s role The project is…

What Next for the Global Car Industry Present and future prospects of electric car manufacturing
Highlights New market-entrants focusing on electric car production are expanding rapidly. Pure-play electric car makers, especially those from China and US-based Tesla, are capturing a growing share of sales; some 45% of global electric car sales in 2024 are from pure-play electric car makers, compared to 35% in 2019. The growth in electric car sales affects both car makers and automotive suppliers, especially those producing powertrains and related components. The automotive supplier market is worth about USD 1.3 trillion, equivalent to over 40% of the global car market. For all components except batteries, companies from…

Global Energy Review 2025 Natural gas
…40% of additional gas demand in 2024 on the back of continued economic expansion. Industry and power sectors drove higher consumption From a sectoral perspective, global gas demand growth was largely supported by industry and electricity generation, which accounted for around 75% of incremental gas demand in 2024. This was bolstered by continued economic expansion in fast-growing markets in Asia, as well as some recovery in Europe’s industrial gas demand, though it remained well below its pre-crisis level. Gas demand for electricity generation grew by near 2.8% year-on-year, as strong increases in North America…
