US Interagency Working Group on Coal and Power Plant Communities
…issued Executive Order 14008, “Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad,” which established an Interagency Working Group on Coal and Power Plant Communities and Economic Revitalization. The group is co-chaired by the Director of the National Economic Council and the National Climate Advisor, and administered by the Secretary of Energy. The first mandate for the working group was to prepare a report that outlines measures and prioritisation of programmes to support and revitalise coal mining and power plant communities. The initial report designated the 25 regions most impacted by coal declines as priority Energy Communities. The report also…

Regulation on approval of safety rules in coal mines
The 2010 regulation on approval of safety rules in coal mines outlines requirements regarding the monitoring and control of atmospheric methane gas and carbon dioxide concentration levels within mines for worker safety. This regulation applies to mines at all stages of operation, construction and closure, regardless of ownership. The requirements stipulate maximum thresholds for methane concentration for specific equipment, as well as ambient levels in the mine workings. Under the regulation, electric machine operation is only permitted at methane concentrations of 1% or less, and electricity is shut off and workers evacuated at concentrations of 1.3% and above. Degassing…

Action plan for retrofitting and upgrading coal-fired power plants (2014 - 2020)
The plan strengthens the energy efficiency and pollutants emission standards applied to coal power plants. The coal power plants with the capacity of over 600 MW are required to achieve the efficiency target of 300g of coal equivalent/kWh by 2020. The coal power plants under construction or planned are required to reach the same level of pollutants emission as natural gas power plants.

Finland
Finland has one of the most ambitious climate targets, a legal obligation to reach carbon neutrality by 2035. It is making progress towards this target and has one of the lowest levels of reliance on fossil fuels among IEA member countries. Finland’s forests, which historically offset significant greenhouse gas emissions, have become a net emissions source. A continued push towards the energy transition is needed, as imported fossil fuels still account for over one-third of energy supply and cover higher shares in transport and key industries.

Burkina Faso
In 2019, Burkina Faso’s energy mix was dominated by biofuels and wastes, with oil products accounting for one-third of the total energy supply. In 2020, 11% of the population had access to clean cooking and only 21% had access to electricity, making Burkina Faso one of the world’s least-electrified countries. For electricity, the country has a target of 95% access for urban areas and 50% for rural areas by 2030. For clean cooking, Burkina Faso has a universal access target for urban areas and 65% in rural areas by 2030. The target for LPG urban penetration…

Delivering on the EU’s electrification ambitions
EU paper The EU has ambitious goals for electrification Electrification is a key pillar of the EU’s energy security, industrial competitiveness, and climate strategy. Today, imported fuels account for around 60% of the EU’s total energy demand and cost the bloc EUR 380 billion in 2024. The risks associated with the EU’s reliance on fuel imports have been highlighted by recent market disruptions linked to the near-closure of the Strait of Hormuz amid the conflict in the Middle East, bringing renewed attention to the EU’s target of increasing electrification from 24% today to 32% of…

Norway
Norway has set ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and establishing a low-emissions society by 2050. As an energy-rich country, Norway is in a unique starting position with respect to the energy transition. An abundance of affordable hydropower has enabled the development of energy-intensive industries and a high level of electrification of homes and businesses with limited greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, as a major oil and gas producer and exporter, Norway will need to support an evolution of its energy sector amid the global energy transition. Altogether, Norway has the opportunity to lead…
