                Climate Act - Denmark's coal phase-out

                Denmark is set to ban coal-based electricity production by 2028, closing the Nordjyllandsværket power station by this date. This phase-out goes along with the repeated commitment of reducing by 70% GHG emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels set in the Climate Act in 2020.

                Just Energy Transition Partnership - Coal phase-out

                Indonesia committed to achieving net-zero by 2060 at the latest, supported by complete coal-phase out by 2056. Furthermore, Indonesia has plans to bring forward its coal phase-out target to 2050 if funding is made available to Indonesia.

                PPCA - Colombia's coal phase-out

                In September 2023, Colombia joined the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA), pledging to stop building new unabated coal power plants and phasing out unabated coal use in the power sector.No statement over the enforcement year of this phase-out have been announced yet.

                National Climate Law - Coal phase-out

                Greece aims to support its climate neutrality pledge by 2050 by completely phasing-out solid fossil fuels, including coal, by 31 Dec 2028.

                Ukraine's coal phase out

                Ukraine's Energy Strategy towards 2050 enforces the commitment to phase out coal use from power generation by 2035. This pledge confirms the position of Ukraine during CO26 in Glasgow in 2021.

                Sweden's coal phase-out

                Sweden closed its last coal power plant, Värtaverket, two years before its original plan i.e. 2020.The city of Stockholm, half owner of the plant, led this decision in December 2019.

                At COP28, the US Climate Envoy John Kerry mentionned the need to phase-out coal to reach the pledge to reach net zero-emissions by 2035 in the power sector.The United States also joined the Powering Past Coal Alliance in the same period of time.

                PPCA - Singapore's coal phase out

                By joining the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) in 2021, Singapore committed to phasing out the use of unabated coal in its electricity mix by 2050, and to restrict direct government finance of unabated coal power internationally.

                EU initiative for coal regions in transition in the Western Balkans and Ukraine

                …transition, and region-to-region exchanges with EU counterparts. The selected pilot regions will be able to access dedicated trainings through a Coal Academy, technical assistance in the development of transition roadmaps, and receive support to access financing opportunities. Since 2021, the initiative’s secretariat in Brussels has facilitated its implementation and ensures stakeholder collaboration. It is managed by the European Commission and six collaborating international partners, building on the existing EU initiative for coal regions in transition, to reinforce and complement implementation of the European Green Deal and the achievement of a just transition out of coal in Europe.

                China’s coal and steel capacity cuts and worker re-employment

                In early 2016, China’s government urged coal and steel companies to cut excess capacity, in part to track lower demand driven by slowing economic growth and environmental regulations. However, mindful of the job losses that would result from capacity closures, the government prioritised redeployment of workers, including through professional training. Based on China’s 13th Five Year Plan (2016-2020), the Ministry of Finance in 2016 set up the Industrial Special Fund to disburse CNY 100 billion (EUR 14 billion) toward relocating displaced workers in the coal and steel sectors.
