Climate Act - Denmark's coal phase-out
Denmark is set to ban coal-based electricity production by 2028, closing the Nordjyllandsværket power station by this date. This phase-out goes along with the repeated commitment of reducing by 70% GHG emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels set in the Climate Act in 2020.

EU initiative for coal regions in transition in the Western Balkans and Ukraine

The selected pilot regions will be able to access dedicated trainings through a Coal Academy, technical assistance in the development of transition roadmaps, and receive support to access financing opportunities. Since 2021, the initiative’s secretariat in Brussels has facilitated its implementation and ensures stakeholder collaboration. It is managed by the European Commission and six collaborating international partners, building on the existing EU initiative for coal regions in transition, to reinforce and complement implementation of the European Green Deal and the achievement of a just transition out of coal in Europe.

China’s coal and steel capacity cuts and worker re-employment
In early 2016, China’s government urged coal and steel companies to cut excess capacity, in part to track lower demand driven by slowing economic growth and environmental regulations. However, mindful of the job losses that would result from capacity closures, the government prioritised redeployment of workers, including through professional training. Based on China’s 13th Five Year Plan (2016-2020), the Ministry of Finance in 2016 set up the Industrial Special Fund to disburse CNY 100 billion (EUR 14 billion) toward relocating displaced workers in the coal and steel sectors.
