Türkiye
…has pursued a restructuring of its energy system with the aim of rationalising energy demand growth, lowering energy prices and slowing the pace of import growth.
These reforms have included measures targeted at modernisation, liberalisation and increased domestic production capacity. Notably, Türkiye has seen considerable diversification of its energy mix in the past decade. Renewable electricity generation has tripled in the past decade and the commissioning of Turkey’s first nuclear power facility will further diversify the country’s fuel mix. Still, fossil fuels continue to drive Türkiye’s economy, with a heavy dependency on imports, especially oil and gas.- Overview

Sheltering From Oil Shocks Oil use in industry
Industry accounts for around 20% of global oil demand. Two-thirds of industrial oil demand is used as feedstock in the chemicals industry. There are options that can bring down oil demand in industry, and some flexibility on which oil products are used as petrochemical feedstocks. 10. Leverage flexibility with petrochemical feedstocks and implement short-term efficiency and maintenance measures Description: The majority of petrochemical production capacity in Asia and the European Union can technically switch between different oil products – such as LPG, naphtha, ethane or gasoil – as a feedstock without requiring equipment modifications. Prioritising the processing of oil feedstocks…

Gas Market Lessons from the 2022-2023 Energy Crisis Anatomy of a natural gas crisis
…on Russian gas occurred against a particular geopolitical backdrop: Previous breaches in energy security, including the temporary interruptions of Russian pipeline gas supply to Ukraine in both 2006 and 2009, had downstream implications for EU energy security, prompting EU legislation on supply security and gas market liberalisation. The unravelling of this dominant Russian supply position began ahead of the 2021/22 heating season through two significant and related developments. Russian pipeline flows to Europe fell by about 25% year on year in Q4 2021, notably as a result of Gazprom’s strategy to halt short-term and spot gas sales…

The Netherlands
The Netherlands aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and numerous measures have been introduced to support achievement of this goal. A competitive auctions process awards subsidies to renewables, hydrogen and carbon capture, based on avoided CO2 emissions. An offshore wind roadmap is driving rapid deployment and aims for 11.5 GW of capacity by 2030, while strong innovation programmes support deployment of key decarbonisation technologies. Electricity from solar has experienced an impressive growth, with the Netherlands ranking among the top countries in the world for installed PV capacity per capita. The Netherlands will need to closely monitor…

China’s Official Energy Finance in Emerging and Developing Economies Case 2. Southern power grid’s acquisition of Enel Peru distribution assets
…modernisation has lagged behind regional leaders, and the expansion of renewable capacity will require more robust and flexible distribution systems. Enel Distribución Perú, the country’s largest distributor, has played a central role in supplying Lima and Callao since the 1990s. When Enel announced in 2022 that it would divest from several international markets, including Peru, as part of a broader debt-reduction strategy, the sale opened an opportunity for a long-term investor with strong operational expertise.Against this backdrop, China Southern Power Grid International (CSGI) – a subsidiary of China Southern Power Grid (CSG), one of China’s two…
