Governance Regulation - Energy Union and Climate Action
The Energy Union and Climate Action mechanism is designed to integrate national energy and climate plans covering ten year periods starting with 2021 to 2030, in order to meet climate goals. It aggregates EU and national long term strategies, reporting, monitoring and data publication. GHG emissions are expected to reduce by 40% by 2030 compared to 1990, use of coal is projected to decrease by 70%, and renewable energy is expected to reach 60% of electricity produced.

Just Transition Strategy
Chile's updated nationally determined contribution includes a social pillar which ties together mitigation, adaptation, and integration commitments, focusing on a just transition and the sustainable development goals (SDG). Chile intends to develop a ‘Strategy for Just Transition’ by 2021 that protects the rights of the most vulnerable in decarbonizing the energy matrix, which will address the social and economic implications of the energy transition towards a low-carbon society. Phasing out coal and supporting the reconversion of the workforce notably is part of the strategy.

Proposal for an EU regulation on methane emissions reduction in the energy sector
As laid out in the EU Methane Strategy, the European Commission presented its first-ever EU legislative proposal for a regulation on methane emissions reduction in the energy sector. To abate methane emissions, the regulation introduces a stricter legal framework in the gas, oil and coal sectors, in order to limit methane leaks, venting and flaring.The proposal establishes an enhanced monitoring, reporting and verification regime (MRV) that requires all operators to submit annual reports of their source-level methane emissions. Resolution MME 40065 on strategic energy mining zones
Under Law 1753 of 2015, the Minister of Mines and Enegy may designate strategic zones for mining and energy development to allow the orderly management of natural resources. This resolution designates 8 strategic reserves zones in Córdoba, La Guajira, Norte de Santander, Tolima and Valle del Cauca that all have the potential for methane associated with coal deposits.
