Land-Use Competition between Biodiversity and Net Zero Goals

Natural Resources Canada and the IEA partnered to develop this analytical framework capable of highlighting where solar, wind and critical mineral development risk overlapping with important areas for biodiversity conservation around the world, building on Canada’s leadership in providing open-source geospatial information on land use, resource distribution and ecosystems at risk. …Review was prepared in partnership between the Government of Mozambique and the IEA. It draws on the IEA’s extensive knowledge and the inputs of expert peers from IEA Member countries to assess Mozambique’s most pressing energy sector challenges and provide recommendations on how to address them, backed by international best practices. The report also highlights areas where Mozambique’s leadership can serve as an example in promoting secure and clean energy transitions. It also promotes the exchange of best practices among countries to foster learning, build consensus and strengthen political will for a sustainable and affordable energy future.

National Climate Resilience Assessment for Mozambique
…The increase in variability may pose a threat to the country’s hydropower generation, which accounts for over 80% of the country’s electricity generation. If no additional resilience measures are implemented, IEA modelling projects that its hydropower capacity factor may decline by 9-14% by the end of the century.
