The Role of Innovation in Brazil’s Clean Energy Transition

On 6 October 2020, the ETP Special Report on Clean Energy Innovation will be presented and discussed live online in a conversation between the IEA and senior Brazilian decision-makers. The event is co-organised with Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) and the Energy Research Company (EPE). The discussion will take place in Portuguese and English.

The webinar will start with introductory remarks by Secretary Hélvio Guerra (MME) and a high-level official from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) (to be confirmed). These will be followed by two presentations. Dr Timur Gül (Head of the Energy Technology Policy Division, IEA) will present the main findings of the Special Report on Clean Energy Innovation, and provide insights about the critical needs for faster innovation globally. Mr Thiago Barral (President, EPE) will present Brazil’s National Energy Plan to 2050 drafted by EPE under the leadership of MME, and address opportunities for Brazil in terms of clean energy innovation.

Several esteemed experts from the public and private sectors will then discuss the role of innovation in Brazil’s clean energy transition in the wake of Covid-19, in a panel discussion moderated by EPE. Panellists include Ms Agnes M. da Costa (Head of the Regulatory Advisory Office, MME), Mr Eduardo Soriano (Director of Structuring Technologies Department, MCTI), Ms Raphaella Gomes (Head of Biomass & Renewables, former Head of Innovation, Raízen), Mr Renato Povia (Strategy and Innovation Director, CPFL Energia) and Dr Simon Bennett (Investment Supply and Outlook Division, IEA).

Em 6 de outubro de 2020, o ETP Special Report on Clean Energy Innovation será apresentado e discutido ao vivo online em uma conversa entre a IEA e os principais tomadores de decisão brasileiros. O evento é co-organizado com o Ministério de Minas e Energia (MME) e a Empresa de Pesquisa Energética (EPE). A discussão acontecerá em português e inglês.

O webinar contará com a abertura de Secretário Hélvio Guerra (MME) e representantes de alto níveldo do Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação (MCTI) (a ser confirmado). Estas serão seguidas por duas apresentações. Em seguida, O Dr. Timur Gül (Chefe da Divisão de Política de Tecnologia de Energia, IEA) apresentará as principais conclusões do “Special Report on Clean Energy Innovation” e fornecerá percepções sobre as necessidades críticas para inovação mais rápida em todo o mundo. O Sr. Thiago Barral (Presidente, EPE) apresentará o Plano Nacional de Energia 2050, elaborado pela EPE a partir de diretrizes do MME, e abordará as oportunidades para o Brasil em termos de inovação em energia limpa.

Especialistas dos setores público e privado irão então discutir o papel da inovação na transição para energia limpa do Brasil, em um painel de discussão moderado pela EPE. Os painelistas esperados incluem a Sra. Agnes M. da Costa (Chefe do Gabinete de Consultoria Regulatória, MME), o Sr. Eduardo Soriano (Diretor do Departamento de Tecnologias Estruturantes, MCTI), a Sra. Raphaella Gomes (Chefe de Biomassa e Renováveis, ex-Chefe de Inovação, Raízen), Sr. Renato Povia (Diretor de Estratégia e Inovação, CPFL Energia) e Dr. Simon Bennett (Divisão de Investimentos e Perspectivas, IEA).
