RETA Global Roundtable and IEA Secure Electricity Systems Workshop
Add to calendar
Background information
Since its launch in 2021, the Regulatory Energy Transition Accelerator (RETA) has served as a platform for energy regulators to collaborate, share best practices and receive tailored support to accelerate the clean energy transition. Following the success of the RETA Roundtables in 2024 and 2025, the RETA Administrator, hosted by the International Energy Agency (IEA), is pleased to convene the RETA Global Roundtable and IEA Secure Electricity Systems Workshop in December 2026.
For the first time, the event has been expanded to bring together energy regulators and system operators, recognising their critical and complementary roles in delivering secure, affordable and clean electricity systems. Through a combination of dedicated and joint discussions, participants will exchange experiences and practical insights on topics related to system integration, including, system stability, flexibility, network investment, regional interconnection and cross-border operation.
The event will also provide an opportunity to discuss the IEA's new cross-regional peer-learning programme, which will launch in 2027 and pair regulators with regulators and system operators with system operators to facilitate practical peer-to-peer learning and knowledge exchange across regions.
Event overview
The RETA Global Roundtable and IEA Secure Electricity Systems Workshop will be structured over three days:
Day 1 & Day 2 morning:
Joint workshops: Regulators and system operators will participate in both dedicated and joint workshop sessions covering topics related to system integration. Dedicated discussions will focus on stakeholder-specific challenges, while joint sessions will explore areas of common interest. Participants will also be introduced to the IEA's new cross-regional peer-learning programme, launching in 2027, which will pair regulators with regulators and system operators with system operators to support peer learning and the exchange of practical experience across regions.
Day 2 (afternoon):
RETA Global Roundtable: The RETA Global Roundtable will bring together RETA members and delivery partners to reflect on progress in 2026 and discuss priorities for the 2027 workplan and beyond. Discussions will cover peer-learning activities, delivery partner coordination and future areas of collaboration, with outcomes informing subsequent Steering Committee discussions
Day 3: RETA Steering Committee Meeting:
The final day will comprise a closed meeting of the RETA Steering Committee to review the outcomes of the roundtable, discuss governance matters and agree priorities and next steps for RETA's future work programme and partnerships.
