The Future of Electricity in the Middle East and North Africa

Report launch

Background information

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is a cornerstone of the global energy system and among the world’s fastest-growing electricity markets. Driven by rapid population growth, urbanisation and rising living standards, electricity consumption in MENA has risen strongly in recent decades. This upward trajectory is expected to continue – further propelled by increasing demand for cooling and desalination.

How the region meets demand for power is also poised to evolve. Currently, oil and gas supply nearly all of the region’s electricity, but the mix is set to diversify under today’s policy settings.

The Future of Electricity in the Middle East and North Africa offers detailed regional and country-level analysis of electricity demand and supply. It explores the potential challenges and opportunities countries face and analyses the efforts needed to meet national pledges to deliver more secure and sustainable energy systems.
