Event — New York City, United States

The opening section of this event will be streamed live

Background information

The COP31 Presidency and the IEA, in collaboration with the Australian government and the United Nations, will hold the third in a series of High-Level Energy Transition Dialogues in the lead-up to COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye. The event, which will take place during the UN General Assembly, will bring together ministers, industry leaders, heads of international institutions and civil society representatives to exchange strategic perspectives and help shape practical outcomes ahead of COP31.

The event – co-chaired by IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol, COP31 President-Designate Murat Kurum, Executive Director to the COP31 President of Negotiations Kushla Munro, and Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General on Climate Action and Just Transition Selwin Hart – will focus on opportunities to accelerate electrification, a priority topic for COP31. Participants will discuss what is needed to maximise the potential for electrification around the world, including the rapid expansion of power grids and energy storage, and improved access to financing in emerging and developing economies. The High-Level Dialogue takes place ahead of the UN Secretary General’s High-Level Meeting on Climate Action and the Just Transition on 23 September.

The COP31-IEA High-Level Dialogue series builds on those convened in previous years, starting with the COP28 Presidency of the United Arab Emirates in 2023 and continuing with the COP29 Presidency of Azerbaijan and the COP30 Presidency of Brazil.
