Background Information

We are pleased to announce that the ASEAN Secretariat, the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) will hold a workshop on Sustainable and Energy Efficient Buildings and Cooling in Southeast Asia on 2-3 December 2021. In line with COP 26 and its overall intention to drive further climate improvements, this virtual workshop will bring together expert policy makers, academics, architects and engineers, and industry representatives from across Southeast Asia to share knowledge, experience towards establishing a pathway towards a net zero energy scenario.

Day 1 will focus on the importance of sustainable cooling for ASEAN Member States and examine the design and implementation of effective policy packages for sustainable cooling, with a technology focus on air conditioners and electric fans. This session will touch on policies including regulations, information, incentives, and digitalisation, as well as potential behavioural change interventions to bolster energy efficiency. The session aims identify key implementation strategies and best practice examples to guide ASEAN towards net-zero carbon goals.

Day 2 will focus on the importance of policies to support energy efficient building design, development and construction, operation and energy systems in ASEAN, as well as examine gaps and strategies for implementation of effective policy packages to support net-zero carbon, energy efficient and resilient buildings. During the panel discussion we will explore important components of implementation actions to scale up energy efficiency and renewable energy utilisation in buildings in ASEAN.

Topics for discussion will include implementation of building regulations at both national and city levels, need for capacity building on sustainable energy building policies in the region, and better coordination between different levels of governance, as well as role of the private sector, project developers and financiers to bridge the investment gap for sustainable energy transition of the building sector.

This workshop is part of a collaborative project between the IEA and the ASEAN Member States through the Energy Efficiency and Energy Conservation Sub Sector Network, the ASEAN Secretariat and the ASEAN Centre for Energy and is supported by the ASEAN-Australia Development Cooperation Program Phase II (AADCPII) to develop regional roadmaps for buildings and space cooling.
