Canada
Canada has set an ambitious target to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40-45% from 2005 levels by 2030 and to reach net zero emissions by 2050. Canada’s energy and economic profile presents both challenges and opportunities to achieving these targets given its profile as a major producer, consumer and exporter of energy. Energy production and use in Canada accounts for over 80% of the country’s GHG emissions, with oil and gas production alone accounting for around a quarter. Canada’s electricity system is already among the cleanest in the world, with heavy dominance of hydropower as well…

IEA Commends Austrian Market Reform and Use of International Energy Trade to Enhance Security and Reduce Costs
"Austria has made progress in electricity and natural gas market reform. Its effective use of international energy trade will continue to help the country develop a cheaper, more secure energy sector," said Claude Mandil, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), today at the launch in Vienna of "Energy Policies of IEA Countries – Austria 2002 Review." But the country faces a number of challenges, such as ensuring that the benefits of market reform reach smaller customers as well as larger customers. Lower distribution tariffs and the ability for new entrants – both foreign and domestic – to compete in the market…

The Road from Kyoto: Current CO2 and Transport Policies in the IEA
The Road from Kyoto: Current CO2 and Transport Policies in the IEA More than 27% of total carbon dioxide emissions in OECD countries is produced by the transport sector, and there are still few signs that transportation energy use is peaking. Without new action, the prospects for reductions in CO2 emissions from this sector look bleak. This report reviews transport-related CO2 abatement policies in six IEA countries: Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. The report focuses on past, recent and potential future policies and the policy context in each country. It provides a…

Financing the Modernisation of Power Systems Beyond Coal
The role of transition credits in Southeast Asia Coal is a central component of power systems in Southeast Asia, even as governments have committed to reducing coal‑related emissions. Rapid electricity demand growth, alongside coal’s role in system adequacy, reliability and energy security, complicates efforts to accelerate coal transitions. Recent volatility in international gas markets has reinforced the short‑term economic and security value of existing coal assets, adding complexity to national transition strategies. The region’s young coal fleet also implies substantial long‑term emissions if plants continue operating at current utilisation rates.Against this backdrop, new approaches are being explored…

Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan is a significant producer of coal, crude oil and natural gas, and a major energy exporter. While coal dominates the country’s energy mix, renewable sources of energy are a small but growing share of Kazakhstan’s electricity generation. Gas pipeline network expansion remains a priority, in order to expand access and reduce reliance on coal and LPG for household consumption. Kazakhstan is part of the EU4Energy Programme, an initiative focused on evidence-based policymaking for the energy sector.

Austria can build on its strong energy ambitions through targeted reforms and faster delivery
…governance, and sustained investment are needed to keep Austria’s energy transition on track to meet its objectives.“I congratulate Austria on the progress it has made on improving its energy security and building a resilient electricity system,” said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. “The priority now is to turn its ambitions for the years ahead into concrete actions. This will require swift implementation of key reforms alongside measures to keep energy costs under control, strengthen system flexibility and support a competitive economy.”“The IEA report confirms that Austria has built a strong foundation: a high share of renewable electricity…
