Thematic session: Energy efficiency supporting remote and rural communities
…benefits reach all regions and communities.Remote and rural communities face particular challenges due to geographic, economic and infrastructural constraints that can limit access to affordable and reliable energy. Energy efficiency can help reduce costs, strengthen resilience and improve access to reliable energy services.Across the globe, governments are already advancing impactful initiatives, including energy-efficient retrofits, decentralised energy systems, utility-led electricity savings programmes, grid solutions and capacity-building efforts. These experiences demonstrate the value of policy frameworks that prioritise affordability and accessibility while integrating local knowledge and lived experience, including that of Indigenous Peoples. At the same time…

Thematic session: Demand-side energy data for improving lives
…effective tools to support affordability, energy security and competitiveness. The 11th Annual Global Conference on Energy Efficiency will bring together global leaders to accelerate policy action at this critical moment. The availability, quality, and use of demand-side energy data are essential enablers of effective energy efficiency policy. As clean energy transitions accelerate, understanding energy consumption across end uses, sectors and population groups is increasingly important, yet, demand-side energy data remains limited, particularly in the emerging economies. This limitation constrains government's ability to design targeted policies, support planning and address challenges such as energy access and heat stress…

How governments can best support consumers during this energy crisis
How governments can best support consumers during this energy crisis The conflict in the Middle East has triggered a major shock to global energy markets, with the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz triggering the largest supply disruption in the history of oil markets and significantly impacting supplies of natural gas and a range of energy-related commodities. As concerns over supply security have grown, prices have risen across several parts of the energy system, increasing pressure on household budgets, public finances and economic activity more broadly. In response, many governments have announced emergency measures to protect consumers from…

IEA Ministerial: In the Age of Electricity, energy security depends on resilience and cooperation
…security. In many regions, renewables are among the most secure and cost-competitive sources of new electricity generation, reducing exposure to imported fuel volatility and strengthening domestic supply. When paired with modernised grids, storage and demand-side flexibility, renewables can enhance system resilience while accelerating transitions to energy systems with lower emissions. Many of the participants highlighted that expanding renewable deployment – supported by clear policy frameworks and modernised grids – can advance security, affordability and competitiveness in parallel. At the same time, the transformation of power systems is introducing new vulnerabilities. While electrification offers opportunities to expand energy access and s...

Financing Electricity Access in Africa Pathway to universal access
…spending under the ACCESS scenario, making up over half of spending in decentralised solutions but a slightly lower share in grids. The private sector already plays a key role in solar home systems (SHS) but faces obstacles in other sectors: many countries do not allow private investment in grids, and mini-grid regulations are often unclear on areas such as tariff design. Improving project bankability, including by raising demand for electricity, and tapping into domestic capital markets, can unlock further private capital.Concessional finance is essential for derisking private investment and directing capital to underserved markets. Universal access by 2035…
