State of Energy Policy 2026 Climate pledges
…round of NDCs does not imply stronger annual emissions reductions than the previous 2030 NDCs The past year marked a key milestone in the Paris Agreement’s ratcheting mechanism, under which countries update their climate pledges every five years. As of 27 March 2026, more than 130 countries had submitted new NDCs out of the 194 parties to the Paris Agreement that had previously submitted NDCs under the UNFCCC framework, with the vast majority setting new targets for 2035. In total, these submissions cover close to 75% of today’s energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. Some regions have not yet submitted…

Sustainable Transport Policy for Armenia: A Roadmap Policy recommendations and milestones
…energy and transport policy goals. They require immediate implementation and will have the greatest impact on emissions reduction, infrastructure development and regulatory frameworks.Important Measures: While not as urgent, these actions are necessary for long- term success. They complement critical measures by supporting institutional reforms, fostering technological innovation and strengthening financial mechanisms for sustainable transport.Complementary Measures: These are additional initiatives that enhance and refine the transition process. They may not be essential on their own, but they increase efficiency and enhance the impact of the other measures. This categorisation ensures a balanced and strategic approach, allowing decision makers to…

Global Energy Review 2026 Technology: Solar PV and wind
In 2025, global annual renewable capacity additions increased by 16%, reaching 800 GW despite challenges linked to supply chain strains, grid connection delays, financial pressures and policy shifts. This marked the 23rd consecutive year that renewables set new expansion records. Solar PV accounted for more than three-quarters of new renewable capacity additions worldwide, followed by wind (20%). The remaining share was made up by hydropower, bioenergy, geothermal, concentrating solar power and marine energy. Solar PV capacity additions in 2025 rose by around 12%, surpassing 600 GW for the first time. This expansion brought cumulative solar PV capacity to around…

Sustainable Transport Policy for Armenia: A Roadmap Sustainable transport in Armenia
…the east and Iran to the south. The country spans an area of around 29 800 km2 with a population of just over 3 million. Yerevan, the capital, is the largest city with approximately 1 million inhabitants.Armenia’s economy has undergone numerous reforms since the economic crisis of the early to mid-1990s. It has transitioned from a Soviet-era, centrally planned economy to a partially market-oriented one, with most enterprises now privately owned. Foreign capital investment began in the early 2000s and has been an important contributor to economic growth. In 2024, gross domestic product (GDP) stood…

Financing CCUS at Scale Executive summary
…at the planning stage. These developments represent significant milestones for a sector in which projects are complex, difficult to finance and faced with unique risks. At its core, the challenge for CCUS is commercial viability. In contrast to other clean energy technologies, CCUS manages CO2 – a product with little intrinsic market value and limited standalone demand. This fundamental constraint is compounded by several distinctive risks. As new business models develop around hubs or CCUS services, project developers must co-ordinate capture facilities, transport infrastructure and storage sites across a connected value chain, creating cross-chain risks and complex contractual relationships…

What Next for the Global Car Industry Executive summary
Fundamental shifts are reshaping global car markets The car industry is undergoing profound changes as electric car sales continue to rise and the geography of global car sales shifts. Global car sales approached 80 million in 2024 and have largely bounced back from their pandemic-related slump. Recent growth has been exclusively driven by sales of electric and hybrid cars, which made up around 30% of total car sales in 2024, while global sales of pure internal combustion engine (ICE) cars peaked in 2017 and have since fallen by 30%. By contrast, electric car sales grew more than 14-fold over…

World Energy Investment 2026 How we track investment in energy
…and gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects, investment reflects the capital spending incurred over time as production from a new source ramp up, or to maintain output from an existing asset. For energy efficiency, the measurement task is more complex and much of the expenditure is by consumers for whom purchases of more efficient goods are not investments per se. In WEI 2025, as in other recent IEA reports, investment in energy efficiency aims to reflect the incremental spending by companies, governments, or individuals to acquire a piece of equipment that is more efficient than the local market average…
