                Coal 2025 Executive summaryExecutive summary

Global coal demand in 2025 is set to remain close to 2024 levels amid unusual regional trends Key factors such as weather, fuel prices and policy decisions all shaped global coal consumption in 2025, driving changes in demand that often ran counter to recent country or regional trends. In India – one of the traditional engines of coal demand growth – an early and strong monsoon season depressed electricity demand and boosted hydropower output. As a result, the country’s annual coal power generation is set to decline year-on-year for only the third time in the past five decades. In…

Act on resource circulation of electrical and electronic equipment and vehicles (EEEV Act)

…EEEV act aims to promote the recycling of electrical and electronic equipment and vehicles in order to recover precious and rare metals, and create economic opportunities for recycling technology. The EEEV act extends the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) to the waste electrical and electronic equipment and vehicle products, to better manage the recycling and disposal of related materials. On July 6, 2021, an amendment to the EEEV act was published, including the delegation of the operation of waste resources collection centres, which are facilities for collecting, storing, and recycling used electric vehicle (EV) batteries, to the Korea Environment Corporation (KECO).

                2018 - 2030 Methane Reduction Plan

In joining the Global Methane Pledge, Korea announced a methane reduction plan that included a national target to reduce emissions from 28 million tons in 2018 to 19.7 million tons in 2030, a 30% reduction. The government recognised the need to reduce methane emissions across the agricultural, waste and energy sectors and announced specific targets for each sector. The reduction plan announced specific sectoral targets for the energy, agriculture and waste sectors of reducing methane by 28.6%, 20.9% and 46.5%, respectively, from 2018 levels by 2030. For the energy sector, the methane reduction plan identifies several…

                Tax incentive program

In September 2008, the National Tax Service of Korea announced that various types of businesses would be kept off the list of tax audit targets, including those involved in alternative energy development. The 2,503 businesses confirmed as operating in the field of alternative energy technology, including solar cells, biomass and nuclear power generation, are among the first companies exempted from tax audits for three years from the first profitable year.

Public-Led Offshore Wind Auction Promotion Plan

The Public-Led Offshore Wind Auction Promotion Plan introduces a dedicated public-led allocation within Korea’s fixed-price renewable electricity auction system. In the 2025 first-half wind auction, the government announced around 1,250 MW of fixed-bottom offshore wind capacity, including approximately 500 MW for the newly created public-led auction segment and 750 MW for the general segment. The measure operationalises the offshore wind auction roadmap and strengthens supply-chain and energy-security evaluation criteria. It should be treated as a feed-in premium or fixed-price competitive procurement scheme because selected projects receive long-term…
