Energy and AI
Energy and AI The development and uptake of artificial intelligence (AI) has accelerated in recent years – elevating the question of what widespread deployment of the technology will mean for the energy sector. There is no AI without energy – specifically electricity for data centres. At the same time, AI could transform how the energy industry operates if it is adopted at scale. However, until now, policy makers and other stakeholders have often lacked the tools to analyse both sides of this issue due to a lack of comprehensive data. This report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) aims to fill this…

Ethiopia
In Ethiopia, while electricity reaches less than half of the population, great progress has been made over the past two decades. The National Electrification Program, launched in 2017, outlines a plan to reach universal access by 2025, aiming to supply 35% of the population with off-grid solutions. Meanwhile, Ethiopia is diversifying its hydro-dominated installed generation mix in favour of solar, wind and geothermal to pursue a more climate-resilient power system and reach economic development objectives.

Quad Critical Minerals Initiative
In July 2025, the Foreign Ministers of the Quad (Australia, India, Japan and the United States) met to discuss shared issues and priorities. In a joint statement issued following the meeting, the Foreign Ministers highlighted concerns over the concentration and reliability of critical mineral supply chains, warning that reliance on any one country for processing and refining could expose industries to economic coercion, price manipulation and supply disruptions. To address these risks, the Quad launched the Quad Critical Minerals Initiative, through which members agreed to collaborate on securing and diversifying critical mineral supply chains, including through supply chain resilience measures…

Renewable Energy Target
The Renewable Energy Target (RET) is designed to deliver a 23.5% share for renewables in Australia’s electricity mix by 2020. The RET legislation includes a legislated annual Large-Scale Renewable Generation Targets (LRET), rising to 33,000 gigawatt-hours of renwable energy by 2020, while the Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) is uncapped.
Large-Scale Renewable Energy Target (LRET):The LRET creates a financial incentive for the establishment and growth of renewable energy power stations, such as wind and solar farms, or hydro-electric power stations. It does this by legislating demand for Large-scale Generation Certificates… -
