Southeast Asia Energy Outlook 2026 Southeast Asia’s energy challenges and emerging opportunities
…announced climate pledges would cut the 2035 fossil fuel import bill to around half this level. Renewables, electrification and efficiency therefore offer long-term security as well as emissions benefits. Developing domestic oil and gas resources where geologically and economically viable, and enhancing the resilience of oil supply through diversification and refinery system flexibility also contribute region’s resilient energy system. Some countries turn to coal when gas prices spike, but coal use entails broader risks, including CO₂ emissions and air pollution, which contributed to an estimated 330 000 premature deaths in 2024. Measures implemented as of 7 May 2026…

Key Questions on Energy and AI Executive summary
The AI and energy nexus continues to evolve rapidly The largest technology companies are contributing to a surge in data centre investment, as their capital expenditure exceeded USD 400 billion in 2025 – and is expected to jump by another 75% in 2026. Capital expenditure of just five technology companies is now larger than global investment in oil and natural gas production. Many jurisdictions are seeing project pipelines accelerate dramatically, although not all projects will come to fruition. Those that are moving forward are doing so at pace: the IEA’s unique satellite-based tracking shows that “artificial intelligence (AI) factories…

…This approach would also help sequence actions in electricity, buildings, transport and industry; support targeted measures where progress is lagging; and build shared ownership of the transition.A well-defined roadmap would provide the predictability required for investment, help avoid bottlenecks in supply chains and workforce skills, and ensure that Portugal’s 2030 and 2045 goals remain achievable. This effort could build on the ongoing revision of the Roadmap for Carbon Neutrality 2050, led by the Portuguese Climate Agency, which offers an opportunity to integrate sectoral pathways under a coherent national framework.2. How the global landscape for energy investment is changing
…solar PV, which have seen costs decline by nearly 80% since 2015 thanks to innovation and growing markets. If the costs of technologies across the energy system had remained where they stood a decade ago, an additional $2.5 trillion in spending would have been required in 2026 to support the same energy infrastructure build-out.
In a dynamic global environment, the precise contours of the new energy investment landscape will become clearer over time. In the months and years ahead, the IEA will continue to track the implications of disruptions, innovation and other key factors on the investment cho... -

Investments in renewables, nuclear, electrification and energy efficiency in the past decade have improved energy security in major fuel-importing regions, our investment report finds. At the same time, progress on electrification is uneven, accelerating when infrastructure, prices and finance align – and slowing when barriers persist due to issues such as affordability, grid readiness or technology risk.
The IEA continues to track these developments around the world. At a recent high… -
