…compared to the Global Hydrogen Review 2024 (GHR-24), to a cumulative USD 38 billion, but a larger share of funds is now making its way to specific projects. Several programmes in the European Union, India, Japan and United Kingdom have progressed to the second phase or beyond, with new calls building on learning from the first phase.Almost 90% of the public funding comes from advanced economies; other policy instruments like land allocation, tax incentives and reduced administrative procedures remain more common among emerging markets. …of the regional output, while the remaining less than 20% was primarily produced by Chinese players (through Geely’s Volvo) and US carmakers (mostly from Tesla and Ford’s European plants). The region remained a net exporter of electric cars, with exports exceeding 1 million in 2025 – a 25% rise from the previous year. Other European countries, principally the United Kingdom, continued to be the main destinations for EU exports, representing two-thirds of the total. Recent tariff hikes in the United States reduced North America’s share of EU exports by nearly four percentage points, though export volumes were similar to 2024 levels. Despite growing exports…

What Next for the Global Car Industry Policy and strategic actions
…to unlock economies of scale and “learning-by-doing”; scaling up battery manufacturing and the skills to support it; selecting the most competitive battery chemistries and innovating the next generations; securing dependable critical minerals supplies; and minimising energy costs for manufacturers. Each country and region has its own strengths and priorities, and national circumstances vary. But there are five main archetypes that can help explain how differences can inform distinct strategies: regaining ground internationally (e.g. European Union, United Kingdom); sharpening EV advantages (e.g. Japan, Korea); playing to domestic strengths (e.g. Canada, Mexico, United States); investing for balanced growth (e.g…

State of Energy Policy 2026 Energy efficiency and fuel switching regulations
…increased stringency. The most significant decreases in efficiency stringency were in the United States, where the One Big Beautiful Bill Act removed corporate average fuel economy civil penalties, and the Department of Energy repealed earlier energy conservation standards for selected appliances. These changes are expected to have large impacts on MEPS compliance out to 2030. Other notable delays or decreases in stringency included revisions to the United Kingdom’s plans to phase out new gas boiler installations, Canada pausing its 2026 zero emissions vehicle mandate to give the automotive industry additional time to prepare, and the Eurasian Economic Union (comprising Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, the…
