POWERING AUSTRALIA: National Reconstruction Fund
Policy to prioritise regional industry under the $15 billion National Reconstruction Fund with up to $3 billion allocated to new energy industries that includes hydrogen electrolysers and fuel switching, and green metals: steel, alumina and aluminium. The fund would operate on similar terms to the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC).

South Australia - Construction of a hydrogen power station, electrolyser and storage facility within the Whyalla City Council
A $593 million (USD 378 million) plan over four years will fund a 200 MW hydrogen power station, 250 MW electrolyser, and 100-ton storage facility in Whyalla. The facility is expected to be operational in 2026 and supports the State’s goal of reaching net 100% renewable energy by 2027.
In 2024, development approval was granted by both State and Commonwealth regulators, including environmental and cultural heritage considerations. The government signed a contract with GE Vernova to supply four 100% hydrogen-ready gas turbines.

Western Australia Government 50 million fund to drive renewable hydrogen industry development
$50 million to stimulate local demand for renewable hydrogen in transport and industrial settings and to drive investment into renewable hydrogen. Funding part of the $61.5 million 2021-22 State Budget announcement to drive renewable hydrogen development and demand stimulation. This program forms part of the $750 million Climate Action Fund. Funding to date includes: $10 million to support hydrogen fuelled transport (2021).

On 16 November 2023, South Australia’s Parliament passed the Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Bill 2023 (SA) (Bill). The Bill will commence as the Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Act 2023 (HRE Act), once regulations have been finalised. Consultation on the draft regulations closed on 15 April 2024. -
