Last updated: 05 September 2025
The new legislation covering on hydrogen production and storage will provide a single access point into government for licensing and regulating hydrogen generation projects, similar to what has been afforded to the oil and gas industry. It will cover both hydrogen production from renewables and from natural gas with carbon capture and storage.
On 16 November 2023, South Australia’s Parliament passed the Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Bill 2023 (SA) (Bill). The Bill will commence as the Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Act 2023 (HRE Act), once regulations have been finalised. Consultation on the draft regulations closed on 15 April 2024.
